@SuzJamieson Obviously "king of another country" is factually incorrect. However, It's funny because I've always seen the royal family as more Scottish than English.

I don't give a monkey's how many languages MSP's give their oaths in. What *does* piss me off is that they're all swearing allegiance to the "king" of another country and his family. They should ALL be swearing allegiance and to be faithful to, the people of Scotland.
Holyrood@HolyroodDaily

Watch: New Lib Dem MSP Yi-Pei Chou Turvey, who was born in Taiwan and raised in Belgium, gives her oath in three languages as she is sworn in at Holyrood.

This is why the Championship is unparalleled. Ayling doesn't play the ball. A blatant penalty, ref not interested. No VAR. Just good, old fashioned, honest incompetence. As the game should be. Marvelous stuff.

We’re not a pure democracy but a constitutional monarchy, with representation for church and nobility. Strip aristocracy out of the system and the Lords become silly and weird, a retirement home for the Commons, dress up for donors.

@karelprince_ If yr English and like Basketball, who you going to follow, local team or NBA team? Following a team is a vehicle through which to follow the game itself. That's why so many ppl are Utd fans, both at home and overseas. It's a way to get into the game

I responded to a tweet where he says ‘support your local MLS team’ and you’re talking about pulling up to the ground to buy tickets😭
AB@botzarelli

@karelprince_ Brentford got promoted to the Championship in 2014 and you could have gone to any home game you liked by turning up ten minutes before kick off and paying on the gate. There were on average 3k unsold tickets every week. We were even in some televised games.

@Ross_Greer As much as I think she was crazy and deserved what happened to her. It's always made me a bit uncomfortable that the markets effectively decided they didn't like Truss and that she ought to go

Maybe at some point we should talk about how British democracy is effectively subservient to 'market forces'? You can't just ignore the bond markets, but it's hardly genuine democracy when the choices of elected representatives (and voters!) are constrained like this.
Paul Johnson@PJTheEconomist

Starmer and Reeves are not kidding when they say this political uncertainty causes economic damage. The only “reset” being achieved at the moment is higher borrowing costs. Result? We’re all worse off. So deeply depressing.

The English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish are the foundation of the United Kingdom. British citizenship rests on them; it does not replace them. The United Kingdom is not an abstract civic container into which any population or culture can be poured. It is the political union created by the historic peoples of these islands: the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish. Their histories, cultures, laws, customs, institutions, memory and principles are not merely sentimental, ceremonial or decorative. They are the substance from which British civic live originated, and the foundations on which our way of life is built. British citizenship is therefore not a the same as or a substitute for those identities. Citizenship is a shared civic status built upon those identities and inseparable from their culture. The English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish are, of course, British, but they are not merely citizens; they are distinct ethnic and cultural peoples who built Great Britain. They are the peoples from whom the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland emerged. They are the peoples who established and spread the principles of democracy, the rule of law, equitable justice around the world. The error has been to treat Britishness as a neutral administrative label detached from the peoples, culture and history that created it. That has allowed mass immigration and mass naturalisation to proceed as though citizenship alone were enough, while the inherited English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish peoples have been relegated, and the character, culture and principles of the country have been subjected to a displacement. That must end. While citizenship for those without distinct ethnic English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish ancestry may be granted, it must only be granted not as a right, but as a privilege that must be earned. It must be conditional on respect for and loyalty to the United Kingdom, our culture, laws, democracy, and the principles and peoples on which they are founded. We must Restore the historic peoples to the centre of British cultural and civic life.

In my view voting should be a right for all those who participate in & contribute to society. It's up to individuals to decide if they want to exercise that right, many don't, but I don't want to see anyone excluded from our democracy.

I don't know enough about this Dr Q situation to comment, it's really up to the Scottish Parliament authorities to decide if there are any issues, but I'm seeing a surprising number of folk question whether foreign residents should even be able to vote at all. >

My 5 year old boy does football training. At the end of the session they do a ‘man of the match’ type thing. My boy is always desperate to win it. He often doesn’t. I explained to him the other day that he didn’t win simply because he wasn’t good enough. That he deffo could win, but he just needs to be better, try harder, be more focused etc. One of the other mums heard me & was aghast at what I said. She told me she is going to get ‘runner-up stickers’ for all the kids who don’t make it. I said no thanks, not for my son. Kids need to learn that they can be the best, but they must apply themselves & dust themselves off when it doesn’t go their way. No consolation prizes, no ‘everyone’s a winner’ etc. There are winners & losers. Wanna win - do your best. Can’t make it? Don’t worry, go & smash something else. Play to your strengths & never, ever play the victim. If more parents & institutions had this attitude, the country would be in a better place - if I say so myself 😉 Cc @KonstantinKisin x.com/KonstantinKisi…

What i don't get, when we see this sort of discourse around Scottish Independence, is why Westminster fought tooth and nail to keep Scotland if we're such a financial burden. It's almost like we're not a burden at all, and they just tell us we are so we don't feel we can leave.
Andrew Neil@afneil

The £26 billion deficit is covered by Westminster — separate from the fixed grant. It adds to the overall UK deficit. The figures are compiled by the SNP-controlled Scottish government and published by it. Why is this so hard for you and so many other cybernats to understand?
