Amanda from Bethlehem

@BethlehemAmanda

Lives outside Philly, but from Bethlehem. You know - Bethlehem. In Pennsylvania. ...What, you thought I meant the other Bethlehem? Who cares about that one?

Hot take: a big part of the disconnect between liberals and leftists regarding No Kings is that a lot of leftists just don't really care about democracy that much. Election integrity doesn't feel like a "real issue" to them because their ideal leader doesn't have to be elected.

there are some people who call themselves polyamorous even though they do not filter for poly partners. some of them may even want one-sided non-monogamy there are also some people who call themselves monogamous even though they cheat on their spouse "people who say they're poly" is a different selector than "people who are accepted by the poly community." intentionally pursuing monogs without admitting you're poly is widely rejected same deal for monogamy. I'm not going to say monogamy doesn't work for anyone because some assholes are serial cheaters there's this weird thing where people can claim they're part of a group, do shitty stuff, and be rejected by that group — but still damage that group's reputation from the perspective of outsiders! (especially willfully ignorant bad-faith outsiders. these people make their case by finding the worst people who identify as the thing and ignore who is actually accepted by the group) do you criticize the gay community when a straight guy goes to a gay bar to hit on women? do you criticize the BDSM community when some outcast loser says their partner can't have a safeword? there are always bad actors trying to get away with shit. communities are mostly worthy of blame when these bad actors aren't repelled

It makes me want to scream, to be honest. I am so incredibly blessed. I remember so much. I can read well. I understand things quickly. And all around me, there are people who, through no fault of their own, *cannot do that*. How is this not a *crisis*?

@TetraspaceWest @MecInterpMystic I also feel like it's kind of hard to top Opus because it represents the pinnacle of someone's work; mythos works because it's the product of an entire *culture*

Really they should name it Elegy or something. I would prefer not to die, but if I'm going to die to a model with a marvel-ass name like Mythos, I'm going joker mode. My demands are simple: - the name must be a poetic form - it must be about death.
Eliezer Yudkowsky@allTheYud

Naming their next model after Cthulhu makes it hard to take Anthropic seriously as the good guys. It's fun at any other software company, not one that actually is flirting with extinction.

@TopRopeDQ @agraybee ...Omfg, this guy has no idea what the context of the song was. 🤣 Aladdin's mom was mad at him for being a ruffian/screwup, so he wanders off by himself to sulk. He sings "Proud of Your Boy" as a vow to go out and make a better life for the two of them.

@benryanwriter @TomVargheseJr No, i asked if she ever went to news websites, and she looked baffled. I asked her how she got news, and she said friends told her, or sometimes celebrities posted news on Instagram. I tried to figure out her politics, but she didn't seem to have any.

@agraybee Menken insisted on bringing it back to honor Ashman, who had died of AIDS, posthumously. It really should be more iconic for millennial liberals. But the universe is strange and path-dependent. In any event, it’s a damn good song, as most Menken-Ashman collaborations were.

@MonicaRaissa The group houses I'm describing cost $1.5–2.5M in the SF Bay Area. Multiple adults pooling their incomes. Being poly is practically required if you want to own a house at those prices 😅

@BethlehemAmanda The scenario you describe sounds lovely. I’m sure it is real for some, particularly in areas where starter homes are still $250,000. The reality I’ve seen on the East Coast with polys paying on $850,000 starter homes with $3000 a month in daycare is more brutal.

TIL paying cheap rent in a group house, contributing to the household chores, and playing with your metamour's babies once in a while is "slavery" I had no idea 😆
AllKindsOfFatigue@MonicaRaissa

@RWToronto @estherzelda0514 Poly really is just exploitation and slavery all dressed up as alt sexuality. If I had a dollar for every poly who admitted their bang maid is also paying rent and doing unpaid child care, I too could have a second career as Ghisilaine Fuckwell.

Ran first race, ultimate aim was increasing physical endurance so I can have more kids. I bought the backpack. Man. That final stretch. That was when I actually caught up with my fitter partner near the end (he crashed from low sugar and slowed down), and got competitive.

I really want, but don't need, this expensive backpack. I'm running an 8K next month. I think my speed that day will be 12-16 minutes/mile. I want to do a linear sliding scale "coinflip": if I achieve 12m/mile that day, I def buy the backpack. 14m, flip coin. 16m, no purchase.

@Terraphant @ehaspel A score of 275 (high Level 2/almost Level 3) for the native English speakers is better than 220 (low Level 2), but still very poor.

While I generally agree with @mattyglesias' Slow Boring piece today about pundits embracing a self-awareness of being out-of-touch from 'typical' Americans, I want to challenge this particular assertion -- it's not quite accurate.
