So I'll drop some truth here, which actually makes me sad, and it's not meant as hate. 1: Cocaine changed your brain chemistry too much. It has destroyed your brain to the point where you're all show. The fighter you once were is sadly gone. 2: Turning to God to seek redemption just won't cut it. To me it shows stupidity. God is man-made, religion is man-made. There is no God, there is no divinity. I could see in your eyes that you're missing «the eye of the tiger» which you once had. I wish you the best and a good recovery, but I think it's time to stop fighting and maybe stick to coaching or start a new era.

My head gasket is gone. Destroyed. I had no injury / injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.

@Brady_H Brady been thinking of adding creatine to my daily routine I run between 5 and 7 hours total a week for about 40-50 miles. Would it benefit me?

XC parents: your role this summer is simple but important. Help make sure your athlete gets to practice, completes their on-your-own runs, and that running remains a priority even during vacations. Let’s be honest: most runs take less than an hour and can usually be done before the rest of the family is even ready for the day. If you’re vacationing somewhere that isn’t safe to run outside… where exactly are you vacationing? 😄 Beyond running, parents can make a huge difference by helping athletes:
• train in relatively new running shoes
• eat mostly home-cooked meals and have a good stock of snacks
• maintain a normal sleep schedule
• actually hear that alarm in the morning Summer isn’t a break from responsibilities. In many ways, teenagers need more structure and support during the summer than they do during the school year. A successful fall season is built during the summer.

I've been pretty inactive on here lately, but while my Twitter mileage has been down, my running mileage has been up. Happy to report new PRs in both the Half and 5K*. *Post-unretirement

What's something runners used to say but is now a relic of the past? I'll go first: "racing flats"

I just saw someone recommend 3x20sec all out, max effort with 2min rest 3 day a week as a time saver…. Sure…until you realize you’ll be lying on the ground for 20min after with a headache, wanting to puke and your legs on fire…

Ahhhhh…this sounds like a classic case of Lydiard misrepresentation. The problem here is that this person takes Lydiard’s "base first" to mean "aerobic ONLY for weeks" — which Lydiard himself never intended. He included hill sprints and form work during base phases. This caricature version of Lydiard has probably done more damage to high school distance programs than any other single idea in coaching.

I was walking the infield before a meet about twelve years ago. Early March. Still cold enough that kids were wearing sweats over their uniforms. I wasn't watching the competition. I was watching my own team. One kid jogging slow laps. One stretching alone by the high jump pit. Two laughing with runners from another school. One sitting on the grass, headphones in, eyes closed. One doing strides way too fast - like he was trying to burn off nerves he didn't know what to do with. Three of them walked up to me at different times in a ten-minute span. "Coach, what should I be doing right now?" I gave them the coach answer. "Get loose. Stay calm. Trust your training." They nodded. Walked away. But I kept watching. And I realized something I hadn't seen before. I had a workout plan for every single day of the season. I had nothing for the 45 minutes before they raced. No structure. No rhythm. No answer to "what does ready look like?" So they wandered. They mimicked whatever the kid next to them was doing. They guessed. And when the gun went off, half of them weren't actually ready — not because they hadn't trained, but because no one had ever told them what to do with the hour that mattered most. That wasn't a them problem. That was a me problem. I had built the engine and forgotten to pave the road to the starting line. Took me another season to fix it. But I never unsee it now.

@pmccall777 @stevemagness I use an easy/moderate/hard with my underclassmen and then as my group of dedicated runners I begin to teach them more about zones. They do hear paces but we focus on feeling instead of pace/HR because too many were using it as an excuse to junk their easy runs.

@stevemagness I face this all the time in my coaching with beginner youth - what do you think the best way to get them running is then? I tend toward intervals - or run/walk until they build some semblance of a base, then we attempt easy/hard type work. Thoughts?

The average person doesn't really have training zones. Why? They have such low aerobic fitness that their middle 'zones' are so slim. When they go from walking slowly to going a bit faster, lactate is already increasing dramatically. They don't have the foundation.
