Living in Canada is crazy because you’ll be an immigrant being told by your vietnamese boss how indian english is not real english just to go pick up your indian coworker and make racist jokes to him

Starting a conspiracy theory that we don't build walkable neighborhoods in the US because of lobbying from European tourism bureaus worried their industry will collapse if more Americans can live in nicer neighborhoods
Hayden@the_transit_guy

We're constantly told that walkable, human-scale streets are illegal to build in the US and Canada because there's simply "no demand" for them. Speak for yourself, I would trade my current setup for a neighborhood like this in a heartbeat. (Prof. Billy Fields, Delft)

@georgebell @RM_Transit Urban gondolas for the portlands would go so hard. I’m from Medellin which was the first city to implement gondolas as public transit, and they are universally loved because of how fast and efficient they are

Anyone who has used an urban gondola knows they are great…but have their limitations (don’t do burst mode). In most of the proposed locations they would be great, and for places like the island and Portlands they would provide an alternative base load that easily competes with buying more ferries…and connectivity to the Ontario line that will basically be impossible to replicate (short of a streetcar bridge over the lift bridge and another one over the eastern gap…which would be an astronomical cost)

There are a lot of gondola type projects proposed in the greater Toronto area and many of them would actually be fairly sensible, however the media political advocate complex treats these as crazy whereas a new streetcar which would almost always be a worse deal is seen as great

@georgebell I feel like the issue is framing them as events and not as natural summer transitions to pedestrian spaces

@M_Chasis @Not_Gilmore So to ask again: did JJ fail to make the connection between “légaliser” and “legalize” in making that comment? Is that really what you think? Was that what Julia deduced?

@StevesterH @Not_Gilmore And this person is clearly just extending on that. Being able to discern legaliser (whether a loan word or a cognate) as meaning to legalise does not entail speaking french but rather a very basic understanding of how languages work

@StevesterH @Not_Gilmore Not the point. The point is that you don’t have to understand french to know that the picture is talking about the same thing as the tweet, and that the key points have already been summarized in english

@Not_Gilmore Not cognates. The english word is a loan. And did you really in good faith think JJ was talking about that one specific word out of the sentence?

I don’t understand why most buses in Toronto take at least half an hour to an hour to show up. @TTChelps Toronto isn’t a small city. Let’s get people home, to work, to school.. to wherever they need to be, please.
