A fun question pair from tonight's A Level Pedagogy meeting. My instinct for Q1 was to draw a graph, so I decided to go for something different for Q2. I then tried to come up with other pairs of questions like this. It's hard! I'd love to see other people's attempts...

@Miss_M_Maths @blatherwick_sam For Trig alternative form, you can consider asking: is that they only version you could use? e.g. if you steer them to R cos (x - a) initially. Get them to try other forms and link to transformations of graphs. Get them to check graph equivalence with technology. Hope this helps.

Okay another question from me... Stretch / Support (differentiation, whatever you want to call it) when teaching A Level classes that are essentially mixed attainment. Any good blogs I can read? Anyone doing something interesting / good?

Doing some analysis of student scripts from Edexcel A-level maths 2023. I'm wondering how others teach "inspection", i.e. max, mins. Paper 1, q13 involved a quadratic and height. Thanks in advance! @TLMaths @mrsouthernmaths @mrbartonmaths @mathsjem

@TLMaths @mrsouthernmaths @mrbartonmaths @mathsjem Not necessarily. Could also be in relation to modulus or trig models, perhaps in the harmonic form, the types seen at AS and A-level. When I teach modelling for any topic, I say "what's the most this can be? what's the least?" but I don't think I'm being very effective.

@Whitehughes I've also had a go. Like my students said it started off relatively straightforward then seemed to get markedly harder at question 5. Have you posted your solutions so I can check mine? Definitely trust yours over mine :-)

Please help! Any idea of a website that gives photographs that can be used for mathematical prompts (particularly for statistics) @mathsjem

@1716Vinny Finished Y13 FM before Easter, hurrah! Y13 Maths still have last topic in mechanics with one teacher, and numeric methods & the trapezium rule with me. The remaining weeks will be very disrupted but hope to fit in good revision lessons. 🤞

To all Key stage 5 maths leads or HoDs. Have you finished teaching the A level spec. And if you have when did you finish and If not, when do you plan on finishing?

@ECR_Maths Big-M has the same appeal for me in linear programming 🤓 I'm sure there's loads of others!

I've taken to calling the Binary Operations topic in A Level Further Maths "Binary Ops", and in my head it now sounds like a cool secret mission that I have to complete. Trying to think of other areas of the curriculum that sound cooler than they actually are 🤔😆

@tm_maths As it's only asking for an estimate 200/40 = 5, -1 for spaces or punctuation marks, gives 4 letters per word approx. If this is on a calc paper, for (b) (52 / 72) * 60 = 43.3, so presumably could argue it's about the same word length, or the words might be slightly shorter.

@mathladyhazel So true.. except in my day the lecturer had filled 3 floor to ceiling black boards and been through 2 alphabets before declaring "therefore phi equals 3" as a finale. I was lost.

@HonestlyUk @mathsjem Have you asked your 6th form team which universities they're referring to? I've never heard of this but can see that if the course is medicine or art, Maths + FM aren't necessarily going to help.

Another question from me - I’m planning a Sixth Form Open Evening and I know things may have changed since I last taught FM: When students do A Level Further Maths at your school, are they doing it as one of three A levels? Or is FM a fourth A level?

@JJewellmaths @mathsjem @Just_Maths @mrbartonmaths I was in the same position 3 years ago. We're with Edexcel, and for FM we opted for Decision 1 and Further Stats 1. We have to parallel teach FM alongside A-level Maths so there'd lots of dependencies. Happy to share our teaching schedule / SOW.
