@golfwritings @MarkAllenGolf I recall hearing that the membership wanted to make some architectural changes and when Thomson was told this, he was opposed, and said take my name off the design. So they decided to do exactly that and redesign the whole thing.

I will never understand why the inferior piece of land at The National - the weakest canvas of the 3 x 18 hole layouts, which was what Peter Thomson had to work with....I will never understand why the decision makers at The National decided it was ok to bulldoze the Thomson design while he was still alive....and why the decision makers would not make that decision after he passed away.

The Old Course at The National GC looked fabulous today. I will never, ever understand the push to remove and not replace the greatest ever “golf trees” - Cyprus trees - just because they aren’t indigenous… what a load of crap. Have a look at the second pic. They are magnificent! I’m not sure who tiled the cart paths 40 years ago - but they are a superb look too. (if you have to have them… ) Side note - 10/10 for the placement of rakes. Out of the bunkers as they should be 😀

@L7760Larry @scott___warren @golfarchitects Doak made a meal of the 6th green and bunkers. It’s likely the reason why he’s not the architect anymore. As for 14, why don’t you try aiming straight ? If you aim left or right on most holes and you’ll find it’s not the ideal location

@scott___warren @golfarchitects NSW has a lot of potential but was a major disappointment last year on my 13 course tour of Australia. The Doak green and bunkers on the par 3 ,, 6th? needs work,14 fairway is horrible,, aim right and you risk going through the 15th fairway. left and you’re in the collection area

Turns out the new little pocket of fairway @golfarchitects built for us on the 14th is the perfect place to get at any RHS pin. Strategy, playability, variety all improved.

@SandbeltGolfer Ok so 16, then 13, and it’s a struggle to pick one out of 3rd, 14, or 15 for the last pick. The more I think of it the closer they are. I love them all. 16 has always been my favourite hole on the course though

@chambleebrandel Im all for anything that makes the game harder for televised events, so much more entertaining when there's absolute carnage! i get the pros enjoy shooting low scores and making birdies the same as all of us, but when you're selling it as a television product i want to see mayhem

I wasn’t aware that every player hit SW to 18 all 4 days, or that players hit 14 wedges a round. I haven’t seen that or found it in the data. I do see that the best players separate themselves with the longest irons shots and by hitting it longer and straighter than their peers.

@CaddieNetwork False - the finish is much less consistent than the best. Rory, for instance, comes to a dead stop. Adams is a bit jerky, before its final rest. I don’t know what I’m talking about, but that’s my feedback. Rory’s is a perfect slot.
