@fake_journals @SpringerNature ... because there is none perhaps?
English

"@SpringerNature journal has retracted over 200 papers since September"
Our question is, why were these not picked up during the original peer review?

@evocellbio But as a very visual species, we humans have always looked at photos as proof that something happened. Both general news as well as science articles have traditionally used photos as data.
With AI, this "a photo or it did not happen" evidence is no longer trustworthy.

@NaudetFlorian Nice! Isn't Sir Brian a PhD in astrophysics or physics (among many other achievements)?

@fake_journals @mohd_alamr And for these reasons, we actively discourage very early career researchers appearing as sole CAs on multi-Au papers and prefer a co-CA status with a more senior researcher to fulfil formal mandates.
English

@fake_journals @mohd_alamr Whether a very early stage researcher can practically and/or even formally bear that responsibility is very much dependent on local laws, regulations and precedent.
English

.
Is it important to be the corresponding author?
Following a recent post from @mohd_alamr, where the corresponding author was recommended to have an h-index >=3 (see buff.ly/4dDrUeq), we said the following:
We have never understood why it is important to be corresponding author. To us, it is an undesirable position as the corresponding authors has to do all the work (e.g. put in all the authors details, submit the manuscript, coordinate the response etc.).
In our discipline a PhD student is often the corresponding author, rather than a more senior member of the team.
Why do people think it is important to get that asterixis next to their name?
Do you think it matters who is the corresponding author (CA)?

@MicrobiomDigest @MDAndersonNews @NorthwesternU @SmutClyde @4BetterScience I cannot help but be skeptical when commercial publishers or their clubs repurpose themselves as protectors of the realm by appropriating initiatives that derive from community efforts to address issues that they have directly contributed to generating & enabling. But who knows?

@Daniel_AvOr @MicrobiomDigest @UniLeiden OK, probably we should reword as signifying that Unis with scandals breaking out are "not necessarily more toxic than others" 😀
English

@MacRoboTweet @MicrobiomDigest @UniLeiden I also think is the second. My concern is that since I graduated, year after year, one scandal breaks out. Which I think is 'good' because it means Leiden cares!
But then, I have experienced toxic academic environments, equally or worse than in the private sector.
English

Leiden University @UniLeiden starts dismissal procedure for professor and their partner due to undesirable behavior and scientific misconduct, including obtaining research material from third parties without permit.
Nineteen people have made statements.
universiteitleiden.nl/nieuws/2024/04…
English

@Daniel_AvOr @MicrobiomDigest @UniLeiden I guess this is a typical knee-jerk reaction, i.e. to assume there is an (especially) toxic environment. It's a bit like when we sometimes assume that there is a culture of dishonesty in a given institution retracting a number of papers. Probably, it's the second option though.
English

@MicrobiomDigest @UniLeiden Leiden University seems to have many scandals in the last couple of years.
I wonder if there is really a toxic environment or Leiden University is cleaning the house regardless the consequences.
If this is a pattern across academia. What other Universities have similar issues?

@fake_journals @RetractionWatch @CrossrefOrg Kudos for the spirit but basically not very useful. As you say these are absolute numbers not %. But at least 1 other important aspect is missing: how amenable, so to speak, the publishers are to considering retractions. Case in point: @MDPIOpenAccess as mentioned by @clementFFF
English

We are really pleased that @RetractionWatch and @CrossrefOrg have joined forces with one benefit being that the Retraction Watch database is now freely available.
Our first analysis is to look at the top ten publishers by the number of retractions. Of course, these figures have to be read with caution, as they are absolute numbers.
We plan to do some work to give a more relative/ratio presentation which will be more meaningful.

English

@MicrobiomDigest Yes, of course. In fact, I was rather disappointed to see that your efforts were not acknowledged in the @ScienceMagazine piece.
English

@MacRoboTweet Oh yes. I reported on this case several times.
