Tuesday of Holy Week, also known as “Fig Tuesday.” LONG POST ALERT The cursing of the fig tree is difficult to grasp. 1. Before cursing the fig tree, Jesus gives us the Parable of the Fig Tree, in which he talks about the need to tend & fertilize the soil of our spiritual life in order to bear fruit. He said, “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Behold, these three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down; why should it use up the ground?’ And he answered him, ‘Let it alone, sir, this year also, till I dig about it and put on manure. And if it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’” - Luke 13:6-9 2. In between the moment when Jesus curses the fig tree and when Peter remarks on what has physically happened to the fig tree that Jesus cursed, Jesus goes into Jerusalem and cleanses the Temple with the ship of cords. (See yesterday’s reflection in my timeline). This cleansing of the temple draws out the meaning of the cursing of the fig tree more clearly….A judgement on Israel, particularly Jerusalem. 3. But it’s more than just a judgement on those people at that time. It’s a lesson that applies to all of us forever. At the last supper, He says, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch of mine that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned.” (John 14:1-6). What does this all mean? Spiritual fruitfulness is essential to all Christians. Stagnancy of spirit is not an option. Like He shows us in the Parable of the Talents, the “wicked and worthless servant” is the one who was spiritually sterile. He was cast out by the master. I must abide in Jesus, and through him, bear good fruit. 4. But I was still confused about the fig tree not being in season at the time of the cursing. Surely, we can’t blame the tree for not bearing fruit in season., can we? Then I read, Saint Jose Maria Escriva, who wrote: “Don’t tell me you have excuses. It availed the fig tree little, relates the Evangelist, that it was not the season for figs when our Lord came to it to look for them. Our Lord comes to pick [figs], knowing full well that he won’t find any at this time of year. However, when the tree proves to be barren in spite of its apparent fertility and luxuriant leaves, Jesus commands, ‘Let no man ever eat fruit of yours hereafter.’ Hard words, indeed! May you never more bear fruit! How must the disciples have felt, especially if they considered that it was the Wisdom of God who had thus spoken? Jesus curses the fig tree because in it he has found only the appearance of fruitfulness — many leaves. Let this be a lesson to us. There is no excuse for being unproductive. Some might say ‘I don’t know enough…’ But that is no excuse. Or else, ‘I am unwell, I haven’t much talent, the conditions are not right, my surroundings…’These aren’t excuses either. How pitiful the man who adorns himself with the foliage of a false apostolate, who has all the outward appearance of leading a fruitful life, but is not sincerely attempting to yield fruit!” Conclusion: We can all make an excuse as to why we are not bearing fruit right now. Jesus does not want an excuse when we meet Him at the judgement. He wants some fruit!

I’m not going to lie. Lent has kicked my butt. It’s been a hard one. On top, I’m still quite sad I’ve lost my old account, and not confident in the slightest I’m ever going to get it back. I wanted to post so much in this season- specifically this week. I wanted to share stories of all “my kids” I teach getting baptized and joining the church. I wanted to share pictures of the woman I’m sponsoring doing the same. I wanted to argue against all the terrible theology I had to break away from in my old evangelical days. I wanted to do good with the little platform I had. Honestly, I went to Mass extremely discouraged. But despite all that, I had all the feels. My heart was ready to burst. I’m so happy I became Catholic. It wasn’t/still isn’t an easy journey. But I’m so glad I did it. Happy Holy Week.

These people are such deranged liars. Even Netanyahu is backtracking on what was done to Cardinal Pizzaballa and the Catholic leadership in the Holy Land. But die hard "Christian" Zionists will absolutely never fault Israel for anything, no matter how horrific or unjustified.
Mostly Peaceful Latinas@mplpodcast305

We’ve known for weeks that the holy sites in Jerusalem were going to be closed due to the war but Pizaballa still went with the purpose of causing this outrage. This was a political stunt. Shameful.
