In Minnesota, 90,000 students have graduated across the state. 90,000 graduates, 40,298 of those graduates, received a bachelor's degree (university level). 7,448 are #Somali. That means out of every 10 people graduating from university, 2 are Somali. Put another way, a community smaller than 1% of the total population has produced nearly 20% of university graduates. A 1,500-year-old tree outlived empires, droughts, and centuries of war. It fed generations, sheltered animals, stored water in its belly when the earth had none. Then it fell — not to a corporation, not to a mining conglomerate, not to a government clearing land for a highway. It fell to a man who needed four walls and a roof. That's not a villain story. That's survival eating heritage because nothing else is on the menu. The civilisations now writing conservation law burned through their own forests to build the industrial base that made them rich, warm, and housed. They didn't discover ecological conscience until they had central heating. Now they export the guilt southward and call it environmentalism. The baobab is gone. The man has his house. Somewhere in Geneva, a think tank is publishing a report on African deforestation — written on a laptop, in a building that stands where an old-growth forest used to be.
