The Botswana Police have recovered a missing copper consignment, a truck, and arrested two suspects following a dramatic heist. A Zambian truck driver, employed by a Zambian transport company, allegedly disappeared with the copper, which was destined for Durban, South Africa. The driver was apprehended on March 17, 2026, at a lodge in Dukwi village. His arrest was facilitated by one of his girlfriends. After he showed her a bag of money, she reportedly stole the cash while he was showering and then alerted the police to his location. Police swiftly moved in and arrested him. Copper hijacking cases are rare in Botswana, where the low population density makes it difficult for fugitives to hide. An official statement from the Botswana Police Service is pending.

Poverty is expensive in a way that people don’t understand. If you can’t afford a dentist you have long term teeth damage. Not affording healthy food means poor health. Not affording ‘good schools’ means missed opportunities. It is a compounding cycle.

[HIJACKING AND KIDNAPPING] Police foiled a kidnapping plot in Katlehong, resulting in the rescue of two victims and the arrest of four suspects, including a popular Vaal DJ Spitjo from Sebokeng. Preliminary report suggests that, information was received from a night-shift security officer at Eastgate Mall regarding suspicious activities involving individuals impersonating another person using her mobile phone. Acting on this intelligence, police initiated a coordinated, intelligence-driven operation which led to the arrest of three suspects at Eastgate Mall. Subsequent investigations directed the police to a safe house in Dikole Section, Katlehong. Upon arrival, an exchange of gunfire ensued. One additional suspect was apprehended at the scene, and two unlicensed firearms with live ammunition were recovered. Two victims, a male and a female, were found at the ‘safe house’ and rescued without injuries. The female victim had earlier been hijacked while driving a navy blue BMW X3 and was subsequently forced to transfer an estimated amount of R180,000 from her bank accounts.
