One of the highlights of the year for the choir is going up the tower on May Morning and singing to the crowds below. This year it was estimated that 16,000 people attended the event! Photos by @hedgehoghugh

May Day William Holman Hunt's gorgeous, vivid 1881 painting of the dawn ceremony of sacred song and revels, gathered around the Choir singing at the top of the tower of Magdalen College Oxford, is another of Port Sunlight's @levergallery fabulous collection of Pre-Raphaelite art.

This year the feast day of St George falls on 28 April 2025. Why will the Church celebrate St George’s Day on a different day this year?🤔

Today, Good Friday, Christians remember the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. Today, many congregations will take part in a Walk of Witness, in remembrance of Jesus' walk with his cross through Jerusalem. Find a Good Friday service in your area at AChurchNearYou.com/lentandeaster.

Today is #MaundyThursday when we remember the Last Supper. The name comes from the Latin word 'mandatum' - to command - recalling the words of Jesus to his disciples: 'I give you a new commandment, that you love one another' Find out more ⤵️

Today is Maundy Thursday, where we remember Jesus sharing the Last Supper, and washing the feet of his disciples. The word 'Maundy' comes from the Latin word 'mandatum', which means 'command'. You can read more about Jesus' command for us to love one another in John 13.

This #HolyWeek, hear Thomas Tallis' masterpiece, The Lamentations of Jeremiah (part one), sung by members of the Abbey Choir. In the 16th century, Tallis set five verses of the Biblical book of Lamentations to music. His exquisite, mournful pair of motets have been a much-loved musical choice for choirs and churches around the world ever since. During Holy Week, when Christians remember Jesus Christ's suffering and death, the Lamentations are often sung in Tenebrae services or on Good Friday. The grief expressed in the Lamentations gives voice to our sorrow as we remember Christ's passion. You can watch the full recording and find out more about the Lamentations - including the text and translation - at: youtu.be/AvV07HjbQPE With our thanks to Andrew Nethsingha, Organist and Master of the Choristers, and to our Lay Vicars: - Simon Ponsford, countertenor - William Balkwill, tenor - Mark Dobell, tenor - Stuart O’Hara, bass - Robert Macdonald, bass
