One of the sickest bad beats I've ever taken happened in 2006. I was playing the Denver Poker Tour's semi-annual championship, a massive free bar-poker tournament with 1,200+ players that took 3 days to complete. By Day 3, I had made the final table and was sitting 2nd in chips. 1st place won a $12,500 WSOP Main Event package. The tournament had developed a fun tradition: whenever you busted someone, you got their nametag as a trophy. One guy, Roy, looked like a decorated war general. He had 40+ nametags stuck all over his shirt. It was 1 PM on a Sunday. Roy was drinking beer straight from the pitcher and playing every pot. In 30+ years of poker, I've never seen anyone run hotter. He seemed to be all-in preflop every other hand and never lost. He had roughly twice my stack, and I was still 2nd in chips. Then came the hand. Everyone folded to me on the button. I raised with 7♠7♥. Roy called from the big blind — a rare departure from his usual all-in strategy. Flop: 8♣ 8♦ 7♣ Bingo. Full house. Roy instantly shoved. I snap-called. He tabled 9♣2♣ for a flush draw. Turn: 8♠ River: 8♥ Quad eights. Just like that, I was out. The WSOP dream was over. My consolation prize? A card protector. Poker can be a cruel game. I have a contact that gets merchandiser fridges that are retired by CVS and Walgreens. They were used to store Ozempic, and they are pretty nice. There are full fridges and half fridges. They are used and some need maintenence, but I can get a truckload of them for $2k. Made $4.6k in 6 days on Facebook Marketplace with my last load.
