Statement by Dr Bob Fu/ChinaAid on the Indictment of 19 Kazakh Human Rights Activists 对华援助协会就19名哈萨克人权捍卫者遭起诉的声明 English Today, ChinaAid stands in full solidarity with the 19 Kazakh human rights defenders who have been indicted and now face the threat of long prison sentences—not for committing crimes, but for telling the truth. These activists are being prosecuted for exposing the Chinese Communist Party’s mass detention, enforced disappearances, and crimes against humanity against ethnic Kazakhs and Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Their only “crime” was to document suffering, amplify victims’ voices, and speak when others were silenced by fear and intimidation. Let us be absolutely clear: This case is not about Kazakhstan’s internal security. It is about China’s transnational repression—the export of censorship, coercion, and punishment beyond China’s borders. The indictment of these 19 defenders sets a deeply dangerous precedent:    •   Peaceful human-rights advocacy is criminalized    •   Truth-telling is labeled as extremism    •   A foreign authoritarian regime is allowed to dictate who may speak freely If these prosecutions are allowed to proceed, they will send a chilling message to human-rights defenders everywhere: that no one is safe from cross-border retaliation. ChinaAid calls on the Government of Kazakhstan to immediately halt these prosecutions, drop all charges against the 19 activists, and uphold its obligations under international human-rights law, including the rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly. We further urge democratic governments, the United Nations, and international human-rights mechanisms to respond decisively. Silence today will only embolden repression tomorrow.
