#JimmyLai is the highest-profile political prisoner in the world. He suffers in a Hong Kong prison for standing up for his beliefs. President Trump has been called the "Liberator-in-Chief." Another historic act could cement that legacy. If anyone can get Jimmy Lai out...@POTUS can. #FreeJimmyLai

"I was incredibly lucky that by the time that I was born, my dad was already a bit older...he was still very busy, but we got to spend a lot of time together growing up." — Sebastien Lai, son of #JimmyLai At 78 years old, Jimmy Lai sits in a Hong Kong prison cell, separated from his family for his pro-democracy advocacy. Now, he is serving an unjust life sentence. It’s time to #BringHimHome and #FreeJimmyLai.

Yesterdays evening, @DeutscheWelle’s Freedom of Speech Award was presented to the imprisoned Hong Kong journalist Jimmy Lai. In the presence of prominent figures from the media and politics – including representatives from the Federal Foreign Office @AuswaertigesAmt – the emotional ceremony at the German @Bundestag highlighted Jimmy Lai’s outstanding character and achievements: The publisher of the influential newspaper “Apple Daily” has been a staunch advocate for the preservation of democracy and freedom in Hong Kong. Lai has relentlessly spoken out against the gradual and systematic infiltration and suppression of the once-free global metropolis by the Chinese state apparatus. The influential entrepreneur could have fled – he also holds British citizenship. Yet Jimmy Lai stayed and refused to be silenced in his commitment to freedom and democracy. This dedication makes Jimmy Lai a defining figure of the Hong Kong resistance – and a target of those in power. For over five years now, he has been held in solitary confinement under appalling conditions. Most recently, Jimmy Lai was unlawfully sentenced to an additional 20 years in prison in a politically motivated trial. I condemn this imprisonment in the strongest terms and have assured Jimmy Lai’s daughter, Claire, who accepted the award on her father’s behalf, of my continued unconditional support. #FREEJIMMYLAI

Claire Lai accepted Deutsche Welle's 2026 Freedom of Speech Award today in Bonn. Her father, Jimmy Lai, was not free to accept it himself. He has been in solitary confinement in Hong Kong for nearly six years. Earlier this year, a court sentenced the 78-year-old Apple Daily founder to 20 years in prison for building a newspaper that defended democracy. @jodieginsberg, CEO of @pressfreedom, honored him with the laudatory speech. An empty seat at a press freedom ceremony says everything. #FreeJimmyLai #BringHimHome

As of today, Jimmy Lai has been imprisoned in Hong Kong for 2,000 days, much of it in solitary confinement, for defending a free press. In a new op-ed, his daughter Claire Lai writes about the father who raised her and what he still teaches her from prison. Read here: washingtonexaminer.com/op-eds/4605364… #FreeJimmyLai

This photo was taken when Jimmy Lai was free. Free to walk, to think, to breathe open air in the city he gave everything to protect. He has not had that freedom in nearly six years. Since 2020, he has been locked in solitary confinement, cut off from the world outside his cell. Earlier this year, a Hong Kong court sentenced him to 20 years in prison. At 78, in fragile health, that is effectively a life sentence. His only crime was running a newspaper that told the truth. He deserves to walk freely again. #FreeJimmyLai

"Every day I wake up, and I hope that today is the day we get my dad home.” — Claire Lai For nearly 6 years, Claire Lai has been separated from her father. No shared meals, no sitting together at Mass, no ordinary family moments that so many take for granted. It’s time to #FreeJimmyLai and reunite him with his loved ones.

A glimpse of Jimmy Lai years before his unjust imprisonment, out on the water, at home, living the life he worked so hard to build. Today, at 78, he sits in solitary confinement, serving a 20-year sentence for defending the freedoms that made moments like these possible. Jimmy Lai deserves to be free again. #FreeJimmyLai

Catholic Review
Catholic Review@CatholicReview·
At his May summit in Beijing, President #Trump made an effort to convince Chinese leader Xi Jinping to release #JimmyLai from his imprisonment in Hong Kong. Jimmy, whom I am honored to call a friend, is a 78-year-old diabetic who has been in solitary confinement some seven hundred days longer than the United States was engaged in World War II and is now serving a twenty-year sentence for threatening Chinese national security. That conviction has no more legal or moral validity than that of the Lord by Pontius Pilate. And I find it deeply moving that, in the prison cell where Jimmy does colored pencil sketches of religious scenes, many of them depict the Crucifixion; one of those sketches is among my most prized possessions. By conforming himself in prayer to the crucified Lord, Jimmy Lai is living his unjust punishment as an occasion of grace. catholicreview.org/the-strength-o… #commentary #Blog #FaithBlog

He denounced Chinese communism, defended the rule of law, and gave Hong Kong a free press, knowing exactly what it would cost him.
