President @WilliamsRuto’s government is building more than 270,000 affordable housing units across over 200 sites nationwide, making Kenya one of the leading African nations implementing the Affordable Housing Program one of the most consequential initiatives in our country.
From my perspective, these projects are transformative. They have created over 640,000 jobs, expanded access to home ownership, restored dignity by addressing informal settlements, and curbed land fragmentation to protect our agricultural land.
Achieving this progress requires strong political leadership from the highest level and innovative ways of mobilising resources at scale. Kenya has demonstrated this by raising local financing through the housing levy, reducing reliance on debt.
I observed this firsthand during an interactive session at the second African Urban Forum held at KICC in Nairobi, which brought together representatives from over 40 countries at the ministerial level.
On the sidelines of the event, I had the opportunity to see some of our affordable housing projects in Nairobi County showcasing a remarkable shift from the past when Kibera, once the largest informal settlement in the region, dominated our narrative.
Today, that settlement is on course to be eradicated, reflecting the tangible impact of these initiatives.
