Embassy of Malta in Italy

H.E. Daniel Azzopardi, Ambassador of Malta to Italy and San Marino, held an official visit to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, particularly to the city of Trieste, on 7-9 April 2026, accompanied by Mr. Alberto Panizzoli, Honorary Consul with jurisdiction over the region.

Prolonged conflict in the Middle East continues to pose serious humanitarian, political and security challenges far beyond the region, including for Europe. In uncertain times such as these, the EU must strengthen its capacity to unite and deliver. I made these remarks earlier this afternoon when addressing a meeting of the Heads of Missions of EU member states in Malta, hosted by the High Commissioner of Cyprus in Malta @ChristofidesY as part of the Cypriot Presidency of the EU @CY2026EU. I also commended the Cypriot Presidency for its leadership at a particularly demanding moment for the European Union, when our collective ability to demonstrate strategic direction, credibility and preparedness is more important than ever.

#ItalyMFA Secretary General, Amb. Riccardo Guariglia, and 🇲🇹 Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, @chriscutajar, had a fruitful meeting regarding #IMEC and customs cooperation, in Rome. Malta’s strategic location - along the route linking the Middle East with the central Mediterranean and continental Europe - makes it a key hub for strengthening the trade, digital and energy connectivity that IMEC aims to promote. Rome’s candidacy to host the future #EUCA headquarters was addressed, resting on key strengths: no additional costs for the EU budget, notable logistical infrastructure, and well-established expertise in the customs sector.
