@MandigoJames@Cloud_thePotato@TheTrueXProphet@nicksortor It’s no different than the president issuing an executive order to limit the size of congress. I’m not sure why you’re being this obtuse. If trump decides to exit, he will, as his authority to do so has been enumerated in the constitution. And you’ll be on here seething.
🚨 BREAKING: President Trump will be discussing WITHDRAWING THE US FROM NATO this afternoon with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte
"They were tested, and they FAILED," Trump said
It's time. NATO needs US. We don't need them!
@MandigoJames@Robertus49BC@nicksortor They said no originally about the Louisiana purchase they said no originality about the US Virgin Islands but both eventually ended up American territory
Leaving nato isn't making another treaty. It's leaving it. Congress can pass as many unconstitutional bills as it likes but at the end of the day it holds zero means to remove a power vested in another branch. It's like believing Congress can pass legislation saying the speaker of the house is now commander in chief of the armed forces.
@jeffersonianguy@Cloud_thePotato@TheTrueXProphet@nicksortor Based on U.S. law passed in 2023, the President cannot unilaterally withdraw from NATO. Congress passed legislation requiring a two-thirds Senate majority or an act of Congress for any U.S. withdrawal, aiming to prevent a president from leaving the alliance
@Cloud_thePotato@TheTrueXProphet@nicksortor If the Senate doesn’t agree then the treaty isn’t done. You do get that there was bill passed in 2024 specifically stating Congress had the power to leave NATO w a 2/3 majority.
It isn't a Trump thing. It's an Article 2 power ffs. The power of making/dealing treaties is a presidential power in Article 2. Not congress. They can't negotiate treaties. Their role is only to advice and consent. The constitution does not state they have an advise and consent role when dissolving a treaty.
@TheTrueXProphet@nicksortor Congress does not have constitutional authority to pass legislation to remove an executive power. That 2023 law is unconstitutional
@nicksortor The US is not going to abandon NATO. At least not fully. They're negotiating the turnover of Greenland. Our alliance partners are in the process of paying for their recent transgressions. They should have taken Trump's original deal.
BREAKING: White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reveals President Trump is still considering withdrawing the U.S. from NATO:
"It's something the president has discussed, and I think it's something the president will be discussing in a couple of hours with Secretary General Rutte. And perhaps you'll hear directly from the president following that meeting later this afternoon."
