This is misleading. The economists made their assumption based on the current political climate of our country, when they made the projections we were in a full scale war with Iran.

When I was in the military, order and discipline were incredibly important! If you allow anyone in the ranks to violate rules, it disrupts and undermines the discipline of the entire unit. No exceptions! This is nuts!

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said he'll "fix" the suspension given to eight AH-64 Apache helicopter pilots after flying low past crowds on July 4th over the beaches in South Carolina. “We’ll fix this,” Hegseth tweeted Thursday night, hours after local news reports emerged that the eight South Carolina National Guard pilots had been suspended. “Carry on, Patriots, ” Hegseth wrote, echoing a March tweet when he unilaterally absolved four other Apache flyers in another safety investigation. Maj. Lisa Allen with the National Guard confirmed the pilots are suspended from flying operations while an internal investigation looks into their performance during the Salute from the Shore event. Maj Allen says the pilots are still assigned to duties outside of flying, but the investigation is examining any possible safety violations that may have occurred during the flyover.

@infantrydort @LeighWolf This one, you are out of your zone. Fly-bys, low passes, etc., can be done safely w/out excessively endangering spectators if something happens. And shit happens even when pro demo teams do things. Maybe go talk to some guys who've investigated some of those crashes.

I don’t know aviation regs, but if they knowingly broke the rules, there has to be consequences.
Gray areas are rare in the military. This doesn’t strike me as a gray area.
What makes the military work is rigid adherence to strict standards.
If people start freelancing on the rules with 60 ton tanks, automatic weapons or in this case, $50 million helicopters…it’s only a matter of time before people start dying.
We already lose ~250 troops a year in training accidents. Most of this incidents are honest mistakes and are of result of the danger inherent in military operations…imagine what the number would be if we allowed negligence to go unpunished?

@mattvanswol They knowingly violated the law, but, as a former commander, I’d call these guys in. But then, clear them to fly again and place the report in my drawer to never be looked back into.
My commander did this for me when I did something similar. It stuck with me my entire career.

The reason is this breaks multiple safety rules.
And I get it, it’s cool. It’s like the movies, etc.
But our military is the best because of its discipline and rigidness toward policy. And if you start rubber stamping violations because they look cool, less cool violations will follow.
And when someone dies over it, things get really bad for everyone involved.
