@MummaLabs Hi Ben- I hope you are well too. Thoughtful debate is hard on X, so I won’t respond by point. Now that this is happening… we’re going to see. Trade as a weapon in an intl power game is zero sum thinking. Trade (dom&intl) grows the pie. We should all want that.

Hi Jonathan - it's been a while; hope you are doing well! The argument for tariffs is more complex than "avocados", as I'm sure you'd agree! Broadly, you'd have 2 claims on how tariffs help the US: 1 - tariffs encourage production of goods to come back into the US. 2 - tariffs are a way to peacefully wield our power and gain concessions that benefit Americans. On (1) it may not benefit those of us in the tech sector, but plenty of people do benefit from bringing various manufacturing/production jobs back into the US (e.g. the various auto production facilities for BMW, Toyota, etc), which supports the national interests both in terms of providing jobs, as well as from a national defense perspective. On (2) it's abundantly clear that Mexico and the rest of Central America have taken advantage of us and enabled a pipeline of migrants to our border, thanks to the treasonous actions of the Biden Administration. This needs to be shut down and punished, and I'll gladly pay more (or shop differently) in order to accomplish that. It's also worth noting that due to the asymmetrical trade, these tariffs will put a lot of pressure on both Canada and Mexico (link below). Given the desirability of the US market, tariffs should be quite effective on both these points. While academics will claim "tariffs don't work", and urban elites will glom on to that, most citizens will intuitively grasp that the benefits come from beyond a narrow-scoped economic ideal that academics are certainly working from. Far from being the "stupid uneducated Magats" that many (not saying you, of course) deem them, I think most Americans understand that international politics is a power game and that tariffs are a tool to use toward other goals as described above. Things like this are why Trump has his highest net approval rating (positive for the first time) even after 10+ years of constant demonization by the press and the left (but I repeat myself). Sorry for the essay and hope this is received well - it just felt like a good opportunity to explain the mindset. There's a broader point here around actually having a President/Government work for the American people rather than wield power against it, but that's a story for another time. x.com/joma_gc/status…

I get avocados. They get money (not a “subsidy”). I want avocados. I don’t want to pay more money. I don’t understand the problem we’re “solving”.

@Gena_I_Gorlin When 3 boys were little, my wife would bake cookies and they’d walk over. Firefighters LOVED unscheduled and with cookies.

Turns out you can just take your children to a fire station, unscheduled, and everyone will love them and offer them affordances

1 in 44 chance of a 8-megaton blast by meteorite 💥 (Hiroshima was 0.015 megatons for comparison). JWST will try to get a better read on its trajectory and size. If needed, deflection has to occur in 2028, not on final approach like in the movies.

@b612foundation has taken the orbit and uncertainty of asteroid 2024YR4, sampled 10K trajectories from the current uncertainty, and propagated them forward. 2.3% of those hit the Earth on Dec.22, 2032. Here is where they hit.

A frequent East Bay stop for me: Vik’s chaat corner. It started out as a small counter in a wholesale grocery warehouse, then became so popular that it got its own large space You can’t go wrong on the menu, just order a bunch of things
