In general children learn to read music (staff notation) through a sustained period of engagement with one of a particular set of instruments. While the voice is a means to the same end it is invariably supplemented by instrumental learning as Tudor Song Schools realised. 1/

@EnglishCadence @Johnfinney8 Yes, I agree and this is part of the rational conversation we should be having. Problem is it’s often presented as a binary, simplistically or as an indicator of ‘rigour’. Reading a thread last night where teaching the alto clef to year 7s was being discussed in such terms.

@sgtoyne On the way home from @FarnhamYouthChr concert a French lady in our train carriage was streaming the service live. Cue an 🇮🇪 🇫🇷 cultural exchange as we sang along & shared hopes for a peaceful future. What an *immensely* wonderful thing. TY @colmflynnire, always so supportive! 🎵

@paddycosgrave What about 35-65? Everyone I spoke to yesterday voted on some variation of: SD-Lab-Green.

The differences between how younger voters, the future of Ireland, voted as compared to those who are mostly retired & asset rich is INSANE. This election once again is a story of two Irelands. The future of Ireland versus yesterday’s Ireland. Both have very different visions.

@MusicEdu4all @TheIFS Yup. But the growing body of robust evidence around the fiscal and economic aspects are a helpful underpinning for all of us.

🥹🙌🏻🙌🏻 And how timely in a week where @TheIFS publishes their findings that the closure of youth clubs has not been cost-effective; for every £1 saved from closures, there are associated losses of nearly £3 due to forgone returns to education and crime costs. Who’dv guessed. 🤷🏻‍♀️

From a youth club to Wembley Arena. Thank you for dancing with us London. Thank you for turning that room into a temple of joy. And to everyone that danced with us on this tour. God Bless you all. With love Femi, TJ, Joe, Ife and James EZ to the world

@ChristineBohan Literally just posted the same thing on ‘the other’ platform. The problem is *entirely* the laughing and carousing. And arguably inviting MOL to ‘launch’ you to public service when he holds an open disdain for public life. It’s gross. 🤢

Some news…! I’m thrilled to be appointed @FoSPRI Musician in Residence 2025, travelling to Antarctica in Jan-Feb for a composition residency like no other. I’m very grateful to the Friends of @scottpolar, the @RoyalNavy, and @hmsprotector for this incredible opportunity. [1/2]

How would you respond to a music teacher that says the PD on thinking ratio isn’t for them because they teach skills and not knowledge? Is music so different that there is no value there?@adamboxer1

@dmthomas90 Thanks to you and team for what I've heard was a really life-enriching experience. Grateful for your support and for these opportunities for young people who simply would not have them otherwise!

@bernardlhughes @Samfr It's a kicker isn't it! Though arguably the real sucker punch is that despite it being pretty common knowledge that this is what happened, there has been outright denial of its negative impact, and worse, a sense that those who have robust evidence are making it up.

@nigelmtaylor Drama and Sport aren’t in the National Curriculum so perhaps a clarifying of that would be useful place to start if we’re talking about every child’s entitlement.

This is encouraging. But I hope it's not only "access" to music et al. The review needs to set out how young people are included, make good musical progress and achieve high standards. Access is a start, but it can't be the only goal.
Bridget Phillipson@bphillipsonMP

Our Curriculum & Assessment Review will give every child: 🧮 Strong foundations in core subjects 🎨 Access to music, sport, art & drama 🗣️ More digital, speaking & life skills We'll deliver a broad, rich curriculum so children leave education ready for life, work & the future.
