@vaxryy @gnukeith I wouldn't call the random-ass patchwork of 3rd party patches and mixed concerns that make up kernel namespaces a "very secure platform". There certainly was an attempt, but it's hard to make secure namespaces if you only start thinking about that stuff 20 years in.

@gnukeith the kernel is made with a very different goal in mind, but you can build a very secure platform on top, if you want to. Flatpaks are a good example of a decent attempt at it.

In all honesty, I'm sure that Linux can be a lot more secure (I'm not even going to pretend I know what I'm talking about) I have never touched the Kernel in any serious way, but any large piece of software is insecure in some way.

@ptr_to_joel Name a more famous duo than Oracle engineers working around to clock to make Java fast and correct, and Java developers working around the clock to make Java programs still be slow and buggy.

@vaxryy Use a declarative configuration language, or risk turning into neovim with a 45 minute start up and constant coil whine as some random ass transitive dependency you pulled mines bitcoins on your GPU to fund their author's krokodil addiciton.

honestly atp we might just make the config pure lua. Transition period of like 2 major releases, small utilities stay hyprlang. There's so much we're trying to pack into hyprland that I don't think a config language makes sense anymore. Yay or nay?

@monospacegames I very much have a sense that the open social web is an evaporating ocean, rapidly turning into an inhospitable salty death zone full of bots, shills, and influence campaigns, a mocking imitation of the people that used to be around.

If programmer speed and efficiency was truly such a significant competitive factor, we wouldn't be packing them like sardines them in noisy and stuffy open floor plan offices.

Did some local LLM-based labeling of the HN comment corpus, tasking the model to classify how likely it is that each comment is: * Using AI-like grammar (e.g. it's not X, it's Y) * Using AI-like markup (e.g. em-dashes) * Trying to shill something * Trying to influence public opinion Still a bit work in progress, but here are some preview data.

There's been a huge uptick in this sort of brigade like behavior around current events. First noted it around LK99, that failed room temperature semiconductor in 2023, but it just keeps happening.

I have a hunch, but cannot prove, that prediction markets are the driving force behind a lot of we disinformation online, since they essentially monetarily incentivize making people misjudge the state of the world.

@Valen10Francois These two regions (Laponia, Finland & Tierras Altas, Soria, España) have the same population density (≈2 habitants/2km) Crazy comparing the climate and extension of both areas

A map of population distribution in Europe (black = at least one inhabitant per square km) Always stuns me to see how empty swaths of Spain are!

If a website could ever give your browser an STD, this might be the one. Strong contender for sketchiest looking domain name in the database.

RFC 7231: The `Retry-After` header should contain "[...]value [that] is a non-negative decimal integer, representing time in seconds. HTTP server implementers, for some reason: You know what would go well in `Retry-After`? Some frickin' decimal points!
