#internationalwomensday26 A message that I have to repeat every day ! No, I have NOT always been the strong, independent, tough girl that I am today…. Am I ? Yes, I still questioning my self! What about if I strip away all the layers of strength, toughness, persistency, willpower, firmness always being this one person who holds it all together ? What is left underneath? Was I raised to be strong ? No! this something that life and people taught me with their attitude, good and bad! I was 5 years old when I was declined by ballet teacher to be part of her ballet school because my dad was not a lawyer or doctor. At age of 10, I was not allowed to travel with other children for a school competition because most of kids where from upper class I was young Dr when I discouraged to do surgical training because this was work for men. I was asked to stay in the wards instead of being in operating theatre because the boys had priority. I have seen my original ideas being stolen and used as theirs. I was asked to home to look after my children and wash the dishes instead of being in the lab doing experiments during my PhD studies ( while my kids were running around the microscopes) It will take a day to write about what could destroy me and of course today is not day to talk about verbal and physical abuse either …… because who you think you are…. They said Took long time to be able to finally define who I am, how much I can take before I break, to not let my dreams go of because I can’t afford to hold onto them, or someone wants to stop me trying! Took long time to recognise that to be strong you can also be vulnerable, that you also need help and that you don’t need validation to be who you are. I became who I am applying iron discipline and working 100 % harder, that most of the men of my age but what I never gave up on are my principles which are unnegotiable no matter what. Ethos, integrity, honesty, kindness, fairness, generosity, humility, passion, consistency, and hard work is my way ahead. In addition some people say that you are weak or not assertive because you are kind, empathetic and compassionate! Prove them wrong. Don’t give up and don’t negotiate your principles. You might fall but you will raise again stronger because of these principle and because the foundations are strong. Yes, I could give up …. But you know what ? I couldn’t afford to fall apart because I had a daughter myself for whom I wanted always her to be everything she wants to be, I had a son who should learn to appreciate, admire and empower women and who is afraid to say that he is strong because he was raised by strong women (credits to my own mum). I have a granddaughter that her voice should not be loud to be heard ! I owe who I am to my Daughter Vassilia Kanara, to my granddaughter Dora, to my nieces Χρύσα Παπαδοπούλου & Xrisa Papado to my daughter in law #Tseni and my sisters in law Elissavet Maniati Sista Mara Akrivou To my girl friends ( you know who you are ) students, trainees and patients that I want to see them shine in their lives and make this world a better place to be. To all my amazing MALE colleagues and friends that are #HeForShe I owe it to my dad and mum who would be proud of me I owe to my husband #MyDennis and best mate of my life who was always being #HeForShe and an advocate of women’s strength resilience and high skills and who reminds me every single day what a strong woman can be. #HappyInternationalday2026 #DreamBig #fightfortheyoungwomen #girlscanachieveanything #SheCanBeEverything #IfYouDreamItYouCanBelt
