In the aftermath of #GEZANI in #Madagascar, authorities report 31 lives lost, more than 250,000 people affected, 6,800 displaced, and widespread housing destruction. The Government has called for international solidarity as assessments are finalized, with the participation of @MadaRedCross and @IFRC. Increased support in terms of water, sanitation, hygiene, and shelter is being planned.

Following the landfall of intense tropical cyclone #GEZANI in #Madagascar, @BngrcMada reports 9 fatalities, 19 people injured, and more than 1,300 temporarily displaced across 4 regions and 10 districts affected. @MadaRedCross volunteers are supporting rapid assessments where conditions allow and assisting with the management of accommodation sites.

Tropical storm Gezani has intensified into an intense tropical cyclone and is expected to begin impacting Madagascar’s eastern coast in the coming days. It is also likely to affect Mozambique, another country highly prone to disasters. Our IFRC network teams are on high alert. Teams from @MadaRedCross are working with local communities, raising awareness about preparedness in anticipation of #CycloneGenazi and alerting at-risk communities. Both Madagascar and Mozambique have endured harmful cyclone seasons over the past years. Early Warning and Anticipatory Action are essential to the work of our teams, helping communities prevent and reduce disaster impacts. We are local, everywhere.

As intense tropical cyclone #Gezani continues to progress toward the central part of #Madagascar, 5 regions remain under red alert. Heavy rainfall is raising concerns about flooding and landslides along its trajectory. @MadaRedCross continues to support @BngrcMada

As #GEZANI intensifies into a Tropical Cyclone and approaches the eastern coast of #Madagascar, red alerts have been issued for Atsinanana and Analanjirofo. Yellow alerts extend across several regions in the north, west and central parts of the country as the threat of strong winds and heavy rainfall increases. @MadaRedCross volunteers are supporting @BNGRCMada by informing communities, assisting evacuations, and organizing shelter sites for those at risk.

Cyclone warnings have been issued for some areas in the eastern part of #Madagascar (Ambatosoa, Analanjirofo, Toamasina I–II, Brickaville, and Vatomandry). @MadaRedCross volunteers are supporting @BNGRCMada by continuously informing and warning communities, supporting evacuations, and setting up shelter sites.

It was a pleasure meeting Dr Jude Padayachy, Secretary of State for Health, and his team in #Seychelles. We discussed strengthening collaboration between the Ministry of Health & @RedCrossSey, w/ a focus on first aid, blood donation, emergency preparedness & psychosocial support.

This IFRC-DREF allocation was made to support the Malagasy Red Cross Society in a four-month operation aiming to halt transmission of the mpox virus in 6 priority regions by mobilizing 180 trained volunteers to strengthen community surveillance, infection prevention and control, and psychosocial support. In #Madagascar, through @IFRC_DREF, 180 volunteers from @MadaRedCross are helping to protect 50,000 people amid the ongoing Mpox outbreak. This assistance comes at a critical time as communities, notably in Boeny region, now face overlapping risks following Cyclone Fytia.

Tropical Cyclone Fytia made landfall in Soalala, Boeny region, #Madagascar, at 4:30 am on 31 January. In support of @BNGRCMada, @MadaRedCross volunteers continue disseminating alerts, supporting community feedback collection, data gathering, and assistance in evacuation centres.

Big step for disaster resilience in #Comoros! @DGSC_Comores, Comoros Red Crescent, and @ifrc signed a pre-disaster agreement to sharpen coordination and legal readiness. We’re turning policy into practice—mobilizing communities with early action to keep #Comoros safe.

In Morombe, 25,000 trees were planted over 25ha in south-west #Madagascar, strengthening community engagement and climate resilience. This builds on last year’s MoU between @MeddMadagascar , @IFRCAfrica & @MadaRedCross to integrate disaster risk management in adaptation planning.

À Anjouan et à Mohéli, le Croissant-Rouge Comorien a soutenu 64 ménages touchés par le cyclone #CHIDO à travers une distribution de cash. Grâce à ce soutien, les familles peuvent consolider leurs maisons et limiter les risques face aux cyclones à venir.
