I visited Makerfield for The Critic to speak with voters. My visit predates the Survation poll but my findings tally up. Restore is real, Reform popular and Burnham is liked*. Burnham remains the favourite to win despite a Right wing majority here. thecritic.co.uk/a-mean-mood-in…

@AcademicAgent_X Illegal migration is up, legal migration has fallen as a result of late stage Tory measures and a change in conditions (down all across Europe) and because of people leaving the country, confusing the "net" numbers and there is no evidence potholes are fewer. Not woke though.

Star Wars was never meant to be sophisticated thought-provoking science fiction. Released in 1977, it paid homage to the 50s serial action shows that brought back nostalgia for the people of the time. It was basically meant as a kid's movie. The plot was shallow and the acting was poor. It was a cultural phenomenon in 1977 because the special effects were amazing for the time. The sound score was fantastic. And it was a welcome relief from the dark and angsty movies of the 1970s. Trying to milk the franchise for 50 years is a bit much.

@Kittycel66 The problem is LARPERS move, noticeably, like LARPERS, whereas the guys in something like The King, in particular the cavalry, are trained stunt riders with great physicality.

Every movie director who makes a historical film should get a big red button labeled "CALL THE LARPERS!!!" which beams radiowaves straight into the brains of every larper in the vicinity to bring their gear and skills for the movie for it to be more accurate

Long read in @spectator today ✍️ 💥 Those crucial hours on Monday evening - and how a lamb korma stiffened the PM’s resolve 💥 Streeting allies furious - branding him the Poplar Prigozhin. 💥 Burnham’s chances - “a regional accent probably boosts you by 2-3% tops” top pollster

@epkaufm What happens when you account for demographic change? Might the fact the older generation is 90% white and the younger generation is closer to 50% account for this, i.e. this isn't a battle of values but an expression of identity.

Those saying today's woke British young will move right need to get real. The young were nowhere near as left in the past, & moved left due to being woke on cultural issues. Young Brits liberalised on immigration, falling out of love with the Tories.

When you are in charge of the world's 6th biggest economy with a 2.5 trillion GDP and an annual budget of hundreds of billions you cannot seriously boast about breakfast clubs, this is not an achievement, it is decline.
Bridget Phillipson@bphillipsonMP

Enjoyed Kemi’s quip about free breakfast clubs being a defining legacy of this Labour government. When the Tories deride breakfast clubs, it shows how out of touch they still are. A £450 saving is a lot for working families. Easing the morning rush makes a big difference.

Steve Reed is the last man in the country who wants Starmer to remain Prime Minister. The extent to which people will embarrass themselves for the sake of a driver and a government car never ceases to surprise.

@owenjonesjourno In the late 2010s your side blew up the prevailing debates about nationalism/internationalism, wealth inequality (where you were winning) and cultural identity, to go all in on this, and lost. "Bro why do you even care, it's weird to care" It was your whole thing for a decade.
