New Podcast Series! 📢 ECFR’s new weekly accompaniment podcast series “Surviving Chaos” will introduce the most interesting and controversial thinkers to explain the current period of chaos. In our first episode, @markhleonard introduced his new book Surviving Chaos: Geopolitics When the Rules Fail and reflected on what it means to navigate a world in which old assumptions about rules-based order, power and international cooperation no longer hold. The conversation brought together Mark and @carlbildt, former prime minister and former foreign minister of Sweden; Ivan Krastev, chair of the Centre for Liberal Strategies; and @HelleThorning_S, former prime minister of Denmark, moderated by @gideonrachman, chief foreign affairs commentator at the Financial Times. Drawing on Mark’s argument that the world is in an age of “unorder”, the speakers discussed the types of political imagination, resilience and practical action Europeans will need. The crucial question: How can Europe navigate chaos? 🎧 Listen here: bit.ly/4eG2r7R

Very sad news. Andrzej Olechowski, an ECFR Council Member and until recently a Board member, has passed away. He was kind and generous man & principled. A co-founder of Civic Platform, Finance Minister and Foreign Minister. He will be much missed. RIP en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrzej_O…

Happy publication day to @markhleonard whose book Surviving Chaos is out today and could hardly be more timely... or clarifying as global rules collapse. It will change how you think about the "unorder" of our times, and what to do about it. ⬇️ politybooks.com/bookdetail?boo…

I think @MarkHLeonard is right here about Europeans getting overexcited about @MarkJCarney's call for a global 'alliance of middle powers' to resist Trump. They fail to see their own power. "The European Union is not a middle power. The European Union has the potential to both create an order at a whole continental level and also then to make things happen at a global level." "I think it's really important that we work with Canada, that we work with Japan, that we work with other like minded countries to do what we can. But I don't think that a bunch of middle powers working together is going to sustain a different order because they will all, I think, quite likely, and as we saw with Trump's tariffs, they all went and moved quite fast to make bilateral deals with the US rather than hanging together and stopping that from happening. And they'll do the same when it comes to relations with China. Their geographies, their other things are not close enough for that to be a substitute for the US." "Where we are superpowers within Europe is within the European Union. And actually, there's a lot more that can be done there. The biggest frustration for many Europeans is how little is being done to rise to that challenge. You have all these reports, the Draghi Report, the Letter Report, and the kind of absurdity that Britain and the EU share so much together and we can't even agree something like SAFE, the defence deal. When you have a wolf at the door and a lot of chaos ahead of us. And I think two wolves at the door, exactly. At least.” open.spotify.com/episode/1sUyEb…

@gideonrachman (4/🧵) Now: @markhleonard lays out the core argument behind Surviving Chaos ➡️ a world moving from order to overlapping crises. Leonard walks through how economic ties, supply chains, and global systems are no longer stabilising forces but sources of leverage and risk.

Continued the conversations at #AFGG yesterday by moderating a session on “The Reset and the Rest: Xi, Trump, and Global Stability” with former US DepSec Jane Holl Lute and Mark Leonard (@markhleonard). A lively exchange ensued on whether great-power rivalry is redefining the global order, and how the rest of the world navigates a system shaped by Washington, Beijing and an increasingly assertive Europe. Where does India stand in the new world disorder?

We are not the Britain of the Brexit years anymore. We must look outwards, and work with our European neighbours to keep our country safe. There is no British security without Europe, and no European security without Britain.
