@AberdeenCC hi there. Our recycling was missed last collection. We booked another collection last Thursday (case FS-Case-604764979 Missed Bin Collection) but still no collection as yet. Can you help?

Investigating new tools for teaching coding and found a really promising one, very like Edu Replit with a quiz platform too... their quote came in a £2.5K per year. 😅

@KevRodger @CompSciAdams has been my on and off offline Python editor for a while, was only not used whilst I was invested in Replit.

I see Replit isn't running web projects again... Back up plan rapidly required for coursework chaos which is round the corner.

@MarkHay79 Ooh I’ll look into these. Do they have any of the nice extra features? Like code reviews/marking, tutorials ? I was thinking about using VS code for Python and web - with OneDrive for checking pupils work.

@CompSciAdams Was just going to stick with notepad++ for web at N5 tbh db browser has the ability to browse the tables that replit didnt have (and uses SQLite) Thonny has pretty good preakpoints and expression evaluation. Pycharm has a nice clean UI and watchpoints/breakpoints work well

@MattersOfCS Thanks Peter, always great to build up a library, might see if mines need tweaked a little, was desperate to keep them on one page. Hope you are well!

@MarkHay79 They were the original inspiration for my BGE to N5 ones. I liked the less abstract examples you included and thought it would be helpful for my students if I included more variations for the later core concepts and standard algorithms.

An early Christmas present 🎁 for anyone teaching python 3 in the BGE, National 4 or National 5 level CS. Four pages of quick reference cards with short but meaningful python examples grouped into common patterns and algorithms. See CSS Microsoft team on Glow or DM me for a copy

@MrdouglasCS @CompSciScot Trouble is only having 1 Higher course. As soon as we open the can of worms that X is a good topic and Y is a topic how do we fit it into 1 course? Love the regular updates but too much of a good thing would be a bad thing for workload. Also staff training to consider.

@CompSciScot "Too dry" a subject. If only there was a AI unit with it being such a hot topic right now... oh wait, there was it was removed when we changed to "new Higher". If only there was a robotics unit... oh wait there was, it was removed when standard grade was dumped.

"...storytelling to help attract young people into tech. Is "Computer science" too dry a term?" CS was a common theme at today's event around Digital Glasgow which was fantastic to see.
Futurescot@Futurescot_News

Chris Boyland makes passionate point about the role of storytelling to help attract young people into tech. Is ‘computer science’ too dry a term, and does it really convey the message that tech is more of a language - and a culture, even - than a science? #FSGlasgow

Thank you @eslweb for this video showing how PyCharm may make a good replacement for @replit edu. I like the fact that it provides both markdown instruction sheets and student testing for their solutions. Will have a good play around with it myself.
James Abela@eslweb

Following on from this I've recorded a video to help you move from @replit to @pycharm . Its the closest alternative I can see. youtu.be/fYlThkFDsxE and for #Linux #MacOS & #Windows users has some adv.

I’m sure a lot of other Computing teachers in Scotland now looking at alternatives now that @Replit are deprecating Edu Teams as of tomorrow. Made such a great product and now the rug being pulled out midway through the academic year… @CompSciScot @stacshq

@TricksyBell @CompSciScot was heavily invested in replit but we are going to back offline for a bit, using IDLE and perhaps PyCharm and then take a view as to where to go longer term.

@CompSciScot Think we have decide to go back to desktop IDLE 😫 - budget is really limited like everywhere else Also considering DPIA for another platform. Whatever we choose needs in place before coursework- oh and all our existing content out of Repl
