Devastated to hear that the wonderful Dame Averil Cameron has passed away. She was a groundbreaking scholar of Late Antique and Byzantine Studies, a trailblazer for women in academia, a devout Christian and someone who managed to be both formidable and loveable. A true great.

Very interesting report on the effects of continuing working life on women affected by increased increases in the state pension age. Better to be at work than dressing up as a suffragette and campaigning with the only result so far to make money for PR consultants and lawyers!

NEW: On average, working helps women in their 60s maintain cognitive function and delay the onset of physical disability. Not all types of work are beneficial, however. James Banks, @JCribbEcon, Carl Emmerson and @David_Sturrock summarise their new research:

Look Up. This is what a great ceiling looks like. It's St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków, Poland, built 700 years ago. But that's just one breathtaking example, so here are 21 more... 🧵

Having fun writing an article about Aristophanes' Acharnians. I love the detail in this drawing of a performance in 1882: the Megarian's piglet-daughter! The Persian King's "Eye" (spy), Lamachus the bellicose general, Amphitheos the libation-truce god, recumbent Euripides.

Pleae help me choose from these two covers for my eco-Iliad book. I am inclined to go for the one with Achilles fighting the river with the proviso that the peachy skins are replaced with dark brown or black. Thanks once again to @katrinajkelly for the title.

Italians are the SMARTEST people on earth. Even with obesity rates growing, Italy is still one of the healthiest countries. So how do they manage this? Here's the 6 things I found Italian’s are doing, that American’s aren’t. (🧵+ simple steps you can follow)

Just returned from a 5 day pilgrimage, walking from London to Canterbury with no money, tent, phone, or much of a plan other than to keep walking until I got there. It was a hard but peaceful & rich experience, through layers of history & miles of exquisitely beautiful nature…

@edithmayhall The artist does not seem to have had any doubt about the ambiguity. Still, it’s a harsh punishment even in Athena’s book. The supposed lover is making a run for it without any visibly heroic attempt to protect Ismene, but is that Tydeus’s horse which he seems to be commandeering?

Ismene is familiar as Antigone's meeker sister, but in a racier tradition she was killed by the thuggish Tydeus (one of the 7 v. Thebes) on Athena's order when he found her having intercourse (the word προσομιλοῦσαν is as ambiguous in Greek) with her lover Periclymenus. UNFAIR!

@BarbaraRich_law @hjbrander @lincolnsinn That is such sad news. I send my condolences too. Catherine was also a very conscientious co-trustee of the Inn’s staff pension scheme and was much loved by everyone who knew her. She will be greatly missed.

@hjbrander @MarkHerbert8 @kirby_pj I went to Italy on family holidays several times as a child, and always thought it was the most to-be-dreamed of destination. And have returned several times as an adult, but still only visited a fraction of the places I would like to

Is a will made by a terminally ill woman the day before marriage valid or did she die intestate leaving her fortune to her husband? It is arguable that beneficiaries of the will have rectification claim to prove will was made in contemplation of marriage dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1…
