@cochetel Libya doesn't even acknowledge it has responsibility over migrants and refugees, because of the dependency on Europeans for all these years, thanks to the continuous funding. Migration was & is always EU's priority in the eyes of all Libyans. Any deal should factor that in.

An maybe it also underscores the need for Libya to fully implement its obligations under the 1969 OAU Refugee Convention. Legal pathways are not THE solution but only a part of the SOLUTIONS.
Mohammedali Abunajela@IOMSpokesperson

At least 17 Sudanese migrants died yesterday in a shipwreck off Tobruk, #Libya. Of the 33 on board, 7 survived and 9 remain missing. This tragedy underscores the need to strengthen search and rescue, ensure disembarkation in safe places, and expand safe & regular pathways.

@cochetel Hope you can read this: fes.de/en/news/public… I'm happy to provide more recommendations that concretely support UNHCR in this rough period in Libya..and no I don't think #Libya is "unique" and everything is "limited" if we use the right tools available to us as humanitarians.

@cochetel A bit too late? the campaign against INGOs, the UN and UNHCR working on #refugees and #migration in #Libya has been going on for over a year. I've personally been saying for years that the UN's communication strategy should do better to protect itself and the people it serves..

UNHCR clarifies role in Libya amid public discussions over migration lyo.ly/8cs7 The statement does not not say much. Every1 underlands the limits of working in Libya, but why not to say so & indicate which nationalities have access to which service. It is limited.

UNHCR asylum seeker certificates circulated on social media on the false assumption that this is what gets migrants to settle in Libya. I keep saying it:our issue is not only with the management of #migration but with the public &their lack of awareness Sensitization is key 🚨

"The Friday of expelling #Africans from #Libya" A huge social media buzz against migrants & protests happening next Friday, asking authorities to evacuate them, with backlash on UNHCR & IOM Someone needs to put an end to this, & I'm sure that someone can be #EU if they want to

So many tweets on this, but this caught my attention because of the word "rescued": I don't see how a person being forcibly returned back home to experience hardships after almost realizing their dream, is being "rescued"? & no Libya is certainly not the reason for their return.
LasuRadio95.7fm@LasuFM

More than 320 Nigerians stranded in Libya have been rescued with the International Organisation for Migration coordinating moves to help them return to Nigeria. War-torn Libya has become a key departure point on North Africa’s Mediterranean coast for migrants, mainly from ...

Mainstream western discourse on Israel-Palestine makes it sound like only Palestinians or Arabs can be 'radicalized' -- as if we have some sort of inherent condition. But never Israel. Never the occupier. Never the perpetrator of a genocide and its backers refusing a ceasefire.

This EU #MigrationPact is a disaster. Whoever believes this #CEAS agreement will decrease violence at the EU's external borders is simply deluded. This pact is a victory for Europe's far right. A dark and shameful day.

🧵 The #MigrationPact negotiations are over. As EU leaders are about to sell this as a "historic" reform of the migration system in Europe, we join other leading human rights orgs in denouncing its harms. What this Pact will mean for people in practice 👇🏾

I am highly disappointed by the outcome of the Asylum Pact negotiations. It will not lead to equal responsibility sharing but undermines the safeguards for asylum seekers. Even children can be detained for six to nine months. And no human rights monitoring to prevent pushbacks.

The scale of Israeli violence towards Gazans, repeatedly demonstrated genocidal intent and absolute support from Europe & the USA - including banning protest, gagging journalists, and firing football players - is creating a deeper rift between MENA & the West than I've ever seen

There are around 10,000 wounded in hospitals within a week, and this is close to the number of wounded in the 51 day war in 2014. This exceeds the capacity of the most advanced health systems in the world. Let alone a fragile health system that has been suffering for years.
