As someone who grew up during this era and watched EVERY SINGLE EP then, it's noticeable that the show rly lost that whimsy it had in seasons 1-4, instead doubling down on the cynicism, which allowed these weird convos to thrive as the comedy amongst the slapstick suffering

I don't think it's talked enough about how the "Dark Ages" of SpongeBob (Seasons 5 - 9) do this really weird awkward conversation thing really well. It's like the show's edgy teenage years where everyone just has all these sarcastic meaningless conversations with each other
