@PhysInHistory Care to explain to dummies please? Does stronger gravity make one age faster, or slower? What's the difference between the aging process of a person spending an earth year on the earth, and one spending an earth year on the moon?

In 1905, Einstein theorised that time doesn’t pass at the same rate for everyone—it depends on speed and gravity. A moving clock (relative to you) ticks more slowly than your own, and a clock deeper in a strong gravitational field also runs slower than one farther away. So two people who move differently or sit in different gravitational environments will age by slightly different amounts, even if they later meet again and compare watches.

Big political development, if true. According to my internal sources, Congress allegedly sought a major political “return gift” from the BJP in exchange for Bengal. Sources claim Rahul Gandhi’s video at the end of the election campaign, targeting the TMC, helped the BJP and was allegedly drafted in coordination with BJP strategy. There are two names being discussed as the possible return gift: Telangana and Punjab. However, Congress insiders reportedly believe Punjab is too difficult and politically risky. Telangana is now being seen as the more likely understanding, while the BJP is said to be seeking additional favours in Gujarat. My sources have had a strong track record in the past.

Priyank, start reading. It'll help. Here's a funny story: In Beldanga, WB, your Congress actually 'manufactured mandate' for the BJP. TMC had a 20% vote share, INC had 17%, and guess what, BJP won the seat with 31% vote share. BJP can send a 'Thank You' cake to 10 Janpath.
Priyank Kharge / ಪ್ರಿಯಾಂಕ್ ಖರ್ಗೆ@PriyankKharge

BJP is not winning elections anymore. They are capturing the process, gaming the institutions and manufacturing mandates. - West Bengal - Assam - Haryana - Madhya Pradesh - Maharashtra - Lok Sabha elections The real winners are the Election Commission.

That’s false. Governor of West Bengal can call incumbent Chief Minister to prove majority on the floor of the Legislative Assembly. If they lose the floor test, they are constitutionally bound to resign. Otherwise, as under Article 164, the Chief Minister holds office “during the pleasure of the Governor.” If the CM has clearly lost the mandate (election results) and refuses to resign, the Governor can withdraw pleasure and dismiss them. Governor, under convention and constitutional practice, is obligated to invite the leader of the party/alliance commanding majority in the newly elected House to form the government. The outgoing CM has no legal standing to block this once the new House is constituted. President’s rule is the last resort.
Gargi Mukherjee@gargiMu48960835

Governor can maximum ask Mamata Banerjee to resign, but the Governor can never force her to do so. If Didi does not resign, the Governor can recommend President's rule. In that case, no political party will be able to remain as the ruler in Bengal. Again we have to face election in that case

Such an underrated tweet, this. #MangoLove
Historywali@historywali

Eat all mangoes. Eat every mango you can. The small, juicy, fibrous, nameless ones you pluck off that old tree down the gully. The planted-a-Dussheri-seed-but-never-grafted Dussheri-ish mango from your masi’s garden in Bhopal. Blushing Sindhuras. Sweet Kesars. Yes eat as many of those beautiful Alphonsos from Devgad packed carefully in cardboard boxes as you can. But also eat Pairi, Neelam, Ratna. And Sindu - a cross between the Ratna & the Alphonso which is slowly gaining more ground because climate change has wreaked havoc on the finicky Alphonso - ask farmers, yields have been down for a few years now, talk to farmers. Eat with the season. Eat the early mangoes from the south - Mankurad, Badami, Banganapalli, Imam Pasad in late April-May. Eat your middle-India mangoes - Kesar, Bombay Green, and also Malgova and Mallika which are late season bloomers from the south, and your Himsagar, Gulabkhaas, beauties from Malda and Murshidabad - try to lay your hands on a Champa, Saranga, or Kohitoor in May-June! And go both hands in, into piles of Amrapali, Chausa, Malihabadi Dussheris, Langdas in July. This is just the tip of the mango iceberg, there are so many more loved & delicious varieties - India has near 1,500 varieties of mangoes. Why would you eat just one? Of course have your favourites but also look at our beautiful biodiversity - please cherish it! Eat widely. Eat greedily. Eat because these mangoes are so delicious. Eat in RESISTANCE TO LOSS, eat like these mangoes might disappear because some of them already are!

White towels are a legacy of British era, when there were few roads, fewer cars and no ACs. Officer toured on horses and towels were an integral part of hygiene routine. British left, horses were sent away, but towels stayed! It’s not just towels, the size of tables and colour of ink are also defined by hierarchy. When I was working at Joint Secretary level with the Vice President of India, I had to fight a stiff battle of sorts to order a smaller table that would fit better in my office. The system would not approve of a smaller table! Regarding the colour of ink to be used for noting and signature, Sh. Arun Shourie has written a hilarious, if not ridiculous, memoir as minister. In 1999, two officers in the Ministry of Steel made notings on files using red and green ink. This raised a furore as they were junior officers. The seniors were scandalised and an enquiry was initiated. India’s bureaucracy spent 13 months debating which colour ink officers could use on files. The enquiry was routed through several ministries and departments: Ministry of Steel wrote to Dept of Administrative Reforms It referred to Directorate of Printing (ink experts) Printing referred to Dept of Personnel & Training (DoPT) DoPT threw the ball back: “it’s your Manual, you decide” National Archives was consulted for longevity of ink colours Ministry of Defence consulted for Army ink hierarchy Conclusion after 13 months: juniors wrote in blue-black or blue ink, because that has the longest life of impression. In British era, the files had to travel to Britain, so juniors would write in ink that would stay for the longest. The top brass would sign in green and red. Ruling: Two new paras were added to the manual of office procedure: Para 32(9) says that only officers of Joint Secretary level and above may use red or green ink, and that too only in rare cases. Para 68(5), on the other hand, does not limit the use of these colours to any particular rank (as modern ball pen ink have no issues of shelf life for any colour!) The white towel on the officer’s chair. The red telephone on the desk. The peon standing at the door. The green ink reserved for the senior sahib. These are not accidents of history. They are architecture, the physical grammar of a bureaucratic culture that worships hierarchy.
Ketan@Ketanomy

Walk into any government office in India, towels are a common sight on the chairs of bureaucrats. A ubiquitous symbol of power. Such is the importance of the towel that a few years ago in Uttar Pradesh, lawmakers filed complaints, aggrieved at not being offered chairs draped in white towels during visits to government offices, while pointing out that officers were "sitting on tall, betowelled chairs." The matter was serious enough that the state's parliamentary affairs department had to issue a formal directive to officials, reminding them of the existing hierarchy. The government ordered that MPs, MLAs and MLCs be given towel-adorned chairs "of the same height and decor" at meetings across the state. In the Uttar Pradesh secretariat in Lucknow, around 1,000 towels are changed twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays😀

People with amputated limbs often suffer from Phantom Limb Pain: they feel their missing arm is clenched in a painful fist, but they cannot open it because the arm is not there. Morphine does not work because the pain is generated in the brain, not the body. Dr. V.S. Ramachandran (often called the Marco Polo of Neuroscience) used a simple mirror placed in a cardboard box. He asked the patient to put their intact hand on 1 side of the mirror & the stump on the other. When the patient looked into the mirror, their brain was fooled into seeing 2 healthy arms. When they opened their real hand, the brain saw the phantom hand open as well. For many patients, the painful clenching sensation vanished almost instantly. This Mirror Therapy is now used worldwide to treat phantom limb pain, stroke victims, & other neurological conditions. Ramachandran solved a long-standing medical mystery with a simple mirror & the principle of neuroplasticity, the brain’s remarkable ability to rewire itself based on new sensory information.

@MapOsnit Funny you ask :) As a kid growing up in north India, I wondered why anyone would not prefer the cold winds to the hot summer "loo"😄 We studied other aspects like safety (to an extent) from invasions and the effects on the monsoon cycle in later grades, of course.

Back in school, it sounded like a simple "Himalaya is a big wall," but the reality is much more intense. Those mountains are the primary reason India has a distinct civilization and climate. Without that massive geographical barrier, the cold Siberian winds would have turned the North Indian plains into a barren desert, and the history of the subcontinent would have been written by constant, unchecked invasions from the north. Even today, in the era of missiles and satellites, that "protection" has shifted from just physical height to tactical dominance. The sheer logistics of moving an army over those heights makes a full scale invasion a nightmare for any adversary. It is the ultimate natural fortification that keeps the cold winds out and keeps the monsoon rains in, literally feeding over a billion people. It really is the crown of the subcontinent.

There is a pattern written across the map of England. “-ham” “-ton” “-bury” Names like Nottingham, Southampton, and Canterbury are not random. They are over a thousand years old. And they come from the Anglo-Saxons. “-ham” meant a homestead or village. It appears in names like Birmingham, Nottingham, and Durham. These were settled places, communities built to last. “-ton” meant a farm or enclosed settlement. Luton, Taunton, and Brighton all began as small agricultural communities. Places defined by land, work, and order. “-bury”, often evolved into “-borough” meant a fortified place. Canterbury, Salisbury, and Scarborough. These were defended settlements, often with walls or earthworks. Next time you pass a place ending in “-ham” or “-ton”, you’re looking at a name over 1,000 years old. You don’t need a history book to find Anglo-Saxon England. You just need a map. What does your local place name say about its past?
