One of the most evocative sights of the Highlands is seeing the ancient Scots pine trees’ ghost-like stumps emerging from the peat. Relics like these have been carbon dated to around 5,000 years old. Back then, the climate was 1-2°C warmer than today and trees were able to colonise higher altitudes. Subsequent cooler and wetter conditions, as well as possible human impact, meant that these trees died off, fell, and were covered by peat for thousands of years. The pale and bleached relics we see emerging slowly from the bog remind us of what we used to have.
