Sometimes, children’s actions can be cruel. Empathy is the bridge between cruelty and kindness 🌱 We can help children reflect on the potential impact of their actions. In this case, a child decorating a house with toilet paper is disrespectful and potentially cruel. Guiding empathic behaviour does not involve shaming but rather focuses on perspective-taking and emotional literacy. When children develop the cognitive capacity to understand another person's perspective, they are on the path to becoming empathic. With the emotional capacity to further understand how another person might feel, they move closer to true empathy. It is only when children can truly feel with another person that we see genuine empathy. It is this empathy in children that will change tomorrow. After all, it takes a child to raise a village.
