If she is paying $2000/mo, she has a really GOOD insurance plan. Probably a PPO. While it may seem like someone without insurance may pay less, they actually pay A LOT more. Your insurance company has negotiated with medical providers and are contracted (this is what "in-network" means) on what they "allow" to pay. In order for the medical office/facility to get paid the most they can, they charge the higher rate. In this instance with this video, she hasn't yet met her yearly insurance deductible so she is responsible for 100% of the allowed amount contracted with the insurance company. So while the woman with insurance pays $950 at the beginning of the year, once she has met that yearly deductible, the insurance will pay 100% of the bills. This is what that may look like on your Explanation of Benefit (EOB) your insurance sends to you. At the top it says "THIS IS NOT A BILL" MRI Billed...................... $1200 Ins. Discount.................-$250 Ins. Allowed....................$950 Ins. Paid...........................$0.00 ------- Patient responsibility... $950 (deductible not met) Someone paying out of pocket doesn't get charged as much because it costs more to bill insurance. Remember, had this woman with insurance already paid her deductible for the year her insurance would have paid 100% of the bill while the person paying in cash will still have to pay $400.
