In 1520, Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition was the first European expedition to set foot in Patagonia and reported seeing giant people. The Europeans were described as reaching only up to their waists. Even the name Patagonia is related to giants in some interpretations: in one, Patagonia means “the land of the big foot,” and in another, Patagon was the name of a giant. Nevertheless, the name Patagonia is connected to the reported giant people. The descriptions come from Antonio Pigafetta, who sailed with Ferdinand Magellan and kept a detailed journal. Pigafetta writes: • “This man was so tall that we reached only to his waist.” Elsewhere, he calls them: • “Very big men… well proportioned.” And he repeatedly refers to them as: • “Giants.” The word giant (giganti) is used literally, not metaphorically. 👣 On their feet Pigafetta explains the name directly: • “They are called Patagoni because of their large feet.” He also records: • “They have a voice like a bull.” Today, mainstream scholarship generally rejects these accounts or interprets them as exaggerations, despite the fact that reports of giants appear in the traditions and records of many cultures around the world.
