Did you know that a mother’s care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (#NICU) can significantly impact the health and development of pre-term babies? The Wellbeing Foundation Africa's #Mamacare360 NICU Plus program is a strategic initiative dedicated to enhancing lactation care and advocating for the use of human milk for infants in the NICU. Aligned with the @UN’s Every Woman Every Child Initiative (EWEC), #WBFA’s Mamacare360 NICU Plus promotes the use of Own Mother’s Milk (OMM) in the NICU, ensuring optimal nutrition and care for pre-term infants. Through our #WBFA Midwives and Nurse educators, mothers receive education on the importance of personal and environmental hygiene, with a strong emphasis on thorough handwashing to protect vulnerable infants from infections. The program also highlights the benefits of Kangaroo Mother Care (#KMC), which involves skin-to-skin contact with their babies. This practice helps regulate the baby’s body temperature, enhances bonding, and supports better breastfeeding outcomes. Additionally, proper care of the umbilical cord is emphasized to prevent infections and support the baby’s overall health. By adhering to these principles, mothers can significantly improve the well-being and development of their pre-term babies, facilitating early discharge from neonatal units and fostering a healthy start to life. #ThriveThursday #MamaCare360NICUPlus #KangarooMotherCare #MothersOwnMilk

The Wellbeing Foundation Africa's #Mamacare360 #NICUPlus Program ensures specialized care for fragile infants in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) across our operational regions: FCT Abuja, Lagos, and Kwara. Through our highly trained #WBFA midwives, we deliver timely care for preterm infants while providing vital support to mothers navigating the challenges of the NICU. According to @UNICEF, in 2021, an estimated 2.3 million children died within their first month of life, translating to approximately 6,400 newborns every day. About a third of all neonatal deaths occur within the initial day after birth, and nearly three-quarters occur within the first week of life. A primary focus of our midwives is ensuring infants receive optimal nutrition, with a strong emphasis on facilitating the provision of the mother's own milk. Aligned with the @WHO and UNICEF's ten steps for successful breastfeeding, our midwives advocate for early skin-to-skin contact and guide mothers in expressing breast milk. #WBFA midwives provide comprehensive support, empowering mothers to initiate and sustain breastfeeding, address common challenges, and sensitively respond to their infants' feeding cues. Through these attentive measures, our midwives contribute to the overall wellbeing of both infants and mothers in the #NICU, cultivating a supportive and nurturing atmosphere. #ThriveThursday

On Day 4 of the Advanced Obstetrics and Surgical Skills Training (#AOSS) for the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) faculty examiners at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (#LUTH), participants underwent a post-assessment test to evaluate the level of knowledge acquired during the training. This assessment ensures the effectiveness of the training and the participants’ understanding of the topics covered in the course book. Following the assessment, the Training of the Trainers session commenced. This session focused on equipping participants with the best teaching skills, including leading discussions, conducting Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), and providing mentoring. This preparation is crucial for the participants as they move on to the next phase of their training, which will involve Teaching Practice breakout groups. This project is funded through the Global Health Workforce Programme (GHWP), supported by the UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), and managed by the Tropical Health and Education Trust (@THETlinks) for the benefit of the UK and partner country health sectors. @LSTMnews @LSTM_MNHQoC @LSTMNigeria @THETlinks @ducitbluesolutions @luthofficial @whonigeria @fmoh_nigeria @nphcda @nighealthwatch @pshan_alliance #GHWP #LSTM #WBFA

In continuation of the Advanced Obstetrics and Surgical Skills (#AOSS) Training at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (#LUTH), participants commenced the Training of Trainers (#TOT) breakout sessions. During these sessions, participants took the lead in various group teaching exercises, closely observed by their trainers. The aim of these breakout sessions is to enhance the teaching skills of the participants, ensuring they can apply effective teaching techniques in their future roles. Throughout the #TOT sessions, participants took turns at the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) stations. They led group discussions, facilitated practical exercises, and answered questions from their peers, simulating real-world teaching and examination scenarios. This hands-on experience is designed to build their confidence and competence in teaching complex obstetric and surgical skills. The #TOT breakout sessions are a critical component of the AOSS training, as they prepare participants to not only excel in clinical practice but also to effectively train and mentor the next generation of healthcare professionals. By refining their teaching abilities, participants are better equipped to contribute to the overall improvement of maternal and neonatal healthcare in Nigeria. Earlier today at the Advanced Obstetrics and Surgical Skills Training, our Founder and President, Her Excellency @ToyinSaraki visited participants at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). The training, targeting faculty examiners of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), highlights the Foundation’s partnership with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to curb maternal and neonatal mortality rates in Nigeria. During her visit, Mrs. Saraki delivered a heartfelt speech, stressing the significance of the ongoing training and the productive collaboration with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. She underscored Nigeria’s alarming rates of maternal and neonatal mortality, emphasizing how this partnership aims to enhance the skills of NPMCN faculty examiners, thereby improving healthcare outcomes in Nigeria. According to the 2023 UN report on Trends in Maternal Mortality covering the period from 2000 to 2020, Nigeria accounts for nearly 28.5% of global maternal deaths, with a woman in Nigeria facing a 1 in 19 lifetime risk of maternal death, compared to 1 in 4,900 in the most developed countries. This training reflects the Wellbeing Foundation Africa’s commitment to reducing maternal mortality rates and ensuring the best health outcomes for mothers. Funded through the Global Health Workforce Programme (GHWP), supported by the UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), and managed by the Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET), this project benefits both the UK and partner country health sectors. @LSTMnews @LSTM_MNHQoC @Istm_nigeria @THETlinks @ducitbluesolutions @luthofficial @whonigeria @fmoh_nigeria @nphcda @Nigeriahealthwatch @pshan_alliance #FrontlineFriday #GHWP #LSTM #WBFA
