I think from the beginning that Carney and cohorts displayed a lack of class when confronted with the 51st state invitation by Trump. Instead of reacting in alarm and fear, they should have thanked Trump for the compliment, and then assured him we would continue to be close allies and supporters and trading partners. The whole issue would have died down, and we would continue negotiations. Naturally, we would always be open to alternative markets and trading, but if we ebelieve in local, then nothing is more obviously local to canada than the usa. Alternatives would boost our negotiation leverage, and thus price for our product, but antagonism can reduce our market prices even more than they are today. And put us at the mercy of distant trading partnersina namuch worse case than we presently have with our local neighbor.

PM Carney on the Americans calling the alcohol ban an irritant: "You know what's an irritant? 50% tariffs on steel. 50% tariffs on aluminum. 25% tariffs on automobiles. All the tariffs on forest products. Those are more than irritants, those are violations of our trade deal."
