Now, there are a lot of assumptions behind the Econ 101 models, and looking at where and how real situations diverge from those assumptions can often point to market failures and suggest policy remedies. But this stuff isn't always straightforward (and then there's politics...).

This means for stuff like transportation, healthcare, food, clothing, and housing, people tend to get hit hard. But it's also why luxury taxes are hard to implement. Taxes on stuff rich people buy can hurt the employees at the shiny toy factory more than the shiny toy buyers.

This was a bad Econ 101 class. In a competitive market, who gets the brunt of the taxes depends on the elasticities of supply and demand. This means for stuff people need the most, consumers get hit hardest. For frivolous stuff, producers usually get hit harder by a tax.

It was very disappointing that my Humboldt squid did not win #BestSquid, but he came out with all ten appendages swingin', and I couldn't be prouder. Oh, and, we apparently lost by 3 VOTES!!! so if you didn't vote for my squid...I BLAME YOU PERSONALLY FOR THIS LOSS.

This has overall been a huge week for the weirdos of the squid world. The whiplash squid beat out one of the most iconic squid out there, the Humboldt squid. SO much intrigue and fear surround the mythos of the Humboldt, and yet this lanky weirdo beat it. I kinda love it.

@badamsnavy True but not all possible scenarios are worthy of investigation, e.g., it's technically possible the sound is real crew, who got tricked into switching places with the versions of themselves they saw in a mirror, banging to be let out, but no way would the mirror crew report it.

@jmwooldridge Immediately, you'll see different people exhibit all three responses. But it creates an incentive to shift income from wages to tips (the same way airlines shift from fares to lower-taxed fees), which is the opposite direction we need for pay equity and stability.

Curious as to what economists and others think. If in the future, as Harris and Trump have both proposed, tips are no longer taxed, what would happen to tipping amounts (as a percentage of the bill)? I suspect behavioral economists have some evidence.
