@RobJF24 If their ticket is correct seat, time, date etc, move. Legally you don't have to but it's absolutely the right thing to do. They took the time to reserve their seat, you didn't. Of course, there's the valid question of whether TOCs should run more capacity, but that's off topic.

What's the etiquette if you're on an extremely crowded train and are sitting in a seat indicated as 'available' on the overhead display but someone comes along with it listed on their ticket? (Quick replies, please—they're getting angrier and angrier.)

@LukeMcAlary @TanentzapfLab I'm uk based. Two years ago I reviewed a grant. Decent but a few issues. Scored it moderately highly. Received it again last year, with comments explaining how everything had been addressed. Gave it top score. Got funded. We do it for papers, why not grants?

@TanentzapfLab It would be nice if previous reviews could be submitted with updated grants to show you are actively engaged and working out issues by reviewers.

It will never stop being funny (& simultenously tragic) how often Ive seen grant reviews where the key criticism basically boils down to "the proposal would be much stronger if the applicant did the thing they're proposing to do in order to demonstrate it's feasible & worthwhile"

Air pollution damages health. Domestic wood burning is a major contributor to air pollution (indoor/outdoor) in UK. University College,London, has mapped wood burning sources at fine geographic scale. This will help policymakers identify hotspots to target local interventions.

@AddledAngler @JKempEnergy It's not just the lower decile which is lowest. It's every decile lower than the rest. Two hypotheses are that they're becoming more fashionable, and that more people are working from home so install things to make their home feel nicer.

In Germany you know which platform your train leaves from months in advance – it’s on the timetable. In Britain Network Rail doesn’t tell you until the train is just about to leave.

@rpaton11 There is a real sadistic streak in British broadcasting. Melvyn Bragg is an insufferably obnoxious host, as was Jeremy Paxman, famously. A cottage industry of hostile interviewers like Cathy Newman have copied the template. But only midwits mistake condescension for cleverness.

I'm getting back into In Our Time in a big way, and Bragg's sheer contempt for academics is inspirational
