The Supreme Court just ruled 9-0 that knowing your platform hosts piracy and profiting from it is not copyright infringement. Justice Thomas wrote the opinion: "A company is not liable as a copyright infringer for merely providing a service to the public with knowledge that it will be used by some to infringe copyrights." The DOJ has spent 14 years trying to extradite Kim Dotcom from New Zealand for exactly that, running Megaupload, a platform where users uploaded pirated content. The government's criminal case requires proving a higher standard of intent than the civil case the Court just threw out.
