One of my favorite topics to discuss with clients is the legacy they want to leave for their family, church, charitable organization, and yes, even their pet(s).
Fido must not be forgotten!
Being a financial advisor, it's pretty obvious that most of the legacy conversation is around money and the financial impact the inheritance would have on the aforementioned people, places, and pets.
After all, one of the most well known definitions of legacy is:
"an amount of money or property left to someone"
There is a secondary definition, that I feel is JUST as important:
"the long-lasting impact of particular events, actions, etc. that took place in the past, or of a person’s life."
My view is that the things you do on an ongoing basis also cement your legacy, no matter how big or small.
YOU (yes, YOU) have the ability to influence others in a way that can change their lives for the better.
When was the last time you helped someone you didn't know in a meaningful way?
What would your children say about you if they were asked by one of their friends? Have you instilled the morals & mentality to help them be successful in the future?
Have you taken anyone "under your wing" in your organization, spending the time needed to help expedite the advancement of their career?
My point is, there is more to creating a legacy than accumulating money.
What's more important to you? A financial legacy, or a non-financial legacy?
