Shout out to the coaches sitting with kids or helping them through managing their weight during these long tournaments. It’s a Long day of wrestling and then leaving the arena at 8pm to try to get a workout in & refuel the body to be ready for weigh ins ( for a 3rd time) and wrestling tomorrow! You can’t just write down instructions and expect to have a kid or parents just follow or tell a kid you’re on your own in this situation when they haven’t been there before. Our body can handle a lot, but it’s our mind that stops us. Weeks like this our mind becomes stronger, but it takes having people help guide you through it until you can do it on your own. You don’t give a kid a chapter book who just started reading. Why would we think we can give the bare minimum and expect great results out of them? Surround your kids with those that are adding to their toolbox- those that are leading by showing up and teaching them skills that will later serve their independence. I tell my kids during those tough moments - be sure to look around to see who’s sitting with you, waiting up with you and encouraging you. These kids because yes they are kids- they need guidance, they need to be shown how to navigate multiple weigh ins, what they should eat before, during or after a competition. They need to feel what it’s like to compete multiple days in a row! What better practice can you have for Fargo, NCAA , or International competition than this week! Yes, I’m lucky I have a husband who is a coach and has competed both collegiately and internationally. I can also tell you my kid had 2 of his club coaches making an ice bath for him to sit in at 10pm when they could be in their rooms or elsewhere. Want your kids to be independent? Spend time teaching the skills to achieve that - what you work on now will serve them tenfold later.
