Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar will not accompany the team on their upcoming two-game road trip due to facial fractures and a corneal abrasion. He will not require surgery at this time and is expected to make a full recovery. Avalanche assistant coaches Nolan Pratt and Dave Hakstol will coach the team in Edmonton and Calgary.

@chaser321 Ok believe what you want and continue hating Conroy based on baseless rumors of what he is and isn’t offering in negotiations. But it’ll be funny to come back to this convo when we inevitably ship Rasmus for futures too and continue rebuilding

@chaser321 Based on what? Elliotte and Francis recently said we’re likely gonna move him this summer. Not sure how you can even say with a straight face that Conroy isn’t rebuilding when we traded Hanifin Lindholm Zadorov Marky Tanev Mang for futures in the past year and a half alone

@RingOfFireCGY But all of those mistakes don’t come close to signing Huberdeau to the worst contract in the league before he ever played a game for us

@RingOfFireCGY It probably wasn’t his biggest mistake, but the bigger mistake was choosing to keep Monahan over Bennett when we could’ve gotten a 1st+ for Monahan, kept Bennett and given him a full-time role next to Tkachuk, and had the extra cap flexibility to sign Tkachuk and Jonny long term

Pierre LeBrun thinks Sam Bennett will make Team Canada’s four nations faceoff roster. It’s pretty crazy to think about how far Bennett’s game has come since not being able to crack the top 6 in Calgary. Is trading Bennett one of Brad Treliving’s biggest mistakes as GM?

@JhanHky @HockeyViz This is not true at all about Andersson. In his age 24 season he was playing 21+ mins per game paired with Giordano and on the top PP unit. The Flames were never considering moving on from him despite a rough year. Completely different situation

Leading up to the age-25 season was also the exact moment CGY might've moved on from Rasmus Andersson (a close Liljegren comparable in terms of draft position, handedness and style). (charts via @hockeyviz)

I disagree with this assessment because it doesn't take age into account. Liljegren is heading into his 25YO season, his 4th in the NHL. At the same age: - Toews had just 1/2 a season of NHL experience - Dunn had 1 more NHL season but was stuck in a 3rd pair role in STL - Weegar was starting his 3rd NHL season, with above avg playdriving but minimal point production
JFresh@JFreshHockey

I don't think a comparison to the Toews/Weegar/Dunn class of analytical darlings is warranted, mostly because they put up way better impacts and also had elite skills to point to. And the small-sample playoff results are poor... but...

@DevilsRedAlert Agreed. You’d think fans would be excited to stack up on picks/prospects that could eventually contribute while on their ELC’s in 3-5 years when NJ’s cup window is firmly open. It’s just good asset management.

Still waiting on the official return but I’m blown away that people are mad at a 2nd + 3rd for Toffoli “They should’ve kept him” for what? What do you gain from that

@CJTDevil Completely disagree. Fitz clearly decided that extending Toffoli wasn’t worth it (which makes sense based on reports from CGY last summer that he’s looking for a longer term deal). Keeping pending UFA’s for a 20% chance at the playoffs is how you end up with a bare prospect pool

Ugh, I hate that. Trading a 30-goal t6 winger for picks in the 50-100 range is not something you do at this stage in a build. You have to be REALLY low on both a) your chances at re-signing him, and b) your chances at the playoffs. I don't think either were low enough to do this.
Mike McIntyre@mikemcintyrewpg

#NHLJets have a trade in place for winger Tyler Toffoli. Sounds like a pair of draft picks (believe a 2nd and 3rd) to the New Jersey Devils will be the return. @DarrenDreger was first to report.

@hockeyanalysis If it’s relatively cheap it could make sense, but don’t think it makes sense to pay a big price for a guy like Chychrun. Would prefer to be patient and continue to accumulate assets that can eventually be used to address the glaring organizational weakness at top-6C.

What if the Flames, instead of trading Markstrom, used some of their recently acquired draft capital to acquire a defenseman. Would have to be younger and not a rental to fit in with their longer term plans. Thinking Chychryn from OTT, Pettersson from PIT. Ferarro from SJS.

@HadiK_Scouting @CofRedCentral Ya but that’s why Calgary got the guaranteed 1st and 4th/conditional 3rd instead of conditional 1st (likely 2nd) and conditional 5th (likely nothing unless CAR wins the cup). Comparing just prospects without factoring in the value of the picks is meaningless/misleading.

@CofRedCentral I’d trade Brzustewicz for Koivunen + Lucius so fast the NHL’s phone line would implode, lol. And I love Brzustewicz.

Pens got better prospects for Jake Guentzel than Calgary got for like half their roster. This market is weird. Probably the best the Pens could do.

@JDylanBurke Easy? I guess it depends how you value the guaranteed 1st vs the conditional 1st. Imo: VAN 1st>>> Conditional 1st (likely 2nd) Brzustewicz=Koivunen Jurmo<<Ponomaryov 4th (conditional 3rd)=Lucius Kuz=Bunting (Bunting better overall but extra year on meh contract). Pretty close.

@miketgould I definitely don’t think Conroy is limiting Hanifin’s market just for the sake of doing right by him. It’s much more likely that he’s simply targeting teams that Hanifin will extend with to maximize value. As he should. Hanifin’s agent getting involved is a necessary consequence.

@RingOfFireCGY Yeah Lindholm definitely was more of a priority than those two and it could’ve been different with him, I was just using them as examples of his cautious approach to extensions. Either way we can’t know for sure and should just appreciate that he actually did sell for futures imo

@MatthewRaber11 I think Lindholm was in a different conversation than Zad and Toffoli. In the Flames eyes Lindholm is a 1C. So I think they found him to be more valuable than an aging winger in Toffoli and a third pairing defenseman in Zadorov.

I know people have mentioned this already. But the #Flames should thank Hanifin/Lindholm for saying no to long term extensions offered by Craig Conroy. My only issue with Conroy so far is that he wanted to keep a lot of this core together for the long run which never made sense.

@RingOfFireCGY And for Hanifin my first choice was also to trade him for a big return (1st+great prospect or similar value) but I wasn’t sure if we’d get that for him as a rental and I would’ve preferred re-signing him than late 1st+good not great prospect. But now we just take the best offer

@MatthewRaber11 It was widely reported that they offered Lindholm a 8 year $64-$68 million dollar extension to stay in Calgary. That deal sounded like it was on the table all summer and into training camp. Fair enough on Hanifin. I just think they should cash in on him and start the rebuild.
