We don’t elect prime ministers, we elect MPs who support a government. This idea that the PM won a personal mandate in July 2024 is nonsensical. He has no personal mandate from the electorate, unless you mean the electorate of Holborn and St Pancras.

Starmer told Cabinet not to discuss leadership at the meeting but to come speak to him privately. He then ran away after Cabinet and no one could go to speak to him. Wes Streeting spent numerous minutes trying to talk to Starmer but was turned away, according to POLITICO.

Today, 60 of the 532 Crown courtrooms in England and Wales are sitting empty — that’s 11%. Yet David Lammy claims the only way to tackle the 80,000-case backlog is to slash our fundamental right to trial by jury. Jury trials aren’t the problem. Closed courtrooms are. Open the courts. Save jury trials. It’s not rocket science.

Keir Starmer and David Lammy are hellbent on slashing the right to jury trial while other government business falls by the wayside. Jury trials are a cornerstone of our criminal justice system, a fundamental right and a bulwark against an increasingly authoritarian state. We all know jury trials are not the cause of the 80,000-case Crown Court backlog. The real issue is that between 10 and 25 per cent of Crown courtrooms sit empty on working days. Scrapping jury trials was not in Labour’s manifesto. The government has no mandate for these misguided reforms. This lawyer-led government is undermining public confidence in the justice system and ignoring warnings from senior legal figures, including the Prime Minister’s former mentors Geoffrey Robertson KC and Edward Fitzgerald KC. Establishing specialist rape courts was a manifesto commitment — yet today that amendment was defeated.

Cabinet readout: The Prime Minister opened Cabinet by inviting the leaders of the Commons and the Lords to update on business in both Houses ahead of the prorogation of Parliament. Turning to the King's Speech next month, the Prime Minister said this would not be a return to the status quo. He said the King's Speech would be an opportunity to build towards a stronger Britain, looking forward with hope and opportunity. He then invited the leaders of both the Commons and the Lords and the Chief Whip to brief Cabinet on the process of the King's Speech and its handling. The Cabinet then discussed the legislative programme underpinning the Speech. The Prime Minister then asked the Deputy Prime Minister to update Cabinet on reforms to the courts system. The Deputy Prime Minister set out how the government had inherited a justice system on the brink of collapse. He said this was reflected in cancelled hearings, collapsed trials and a backlog of 80,000 cases. He set out why structural reform was necessary to reduce the backlog and deliver swifter justice for victims. The Prime Minister spoke in support of the plan for reform, referencing the impact of court delays on victims of VAWG and added the human cost was huge.

This means that Powell negotiated the entire Chagos surrender deal without having been vetted and while the CEO of a private organisation with ties to Grandview, a Chinese organisation run by former senior Chinese state officials. China, of course, has a great deal to gain from the surrender of the Chagos islands, and full vetting in summer 2024 would have surfaced these links in order to establish whether they were compatible with Powell’s role in negotiating the surrender deal.
Christopher Hope📝@christopherhope

NEW Interesting. Jonathan Powell was only security vetted after he was appointed National Security Adviser, says Morgan McSweeney. 6 Sept 2024: Powell made special envoy on Chagos deal; 8 Nov 2024: Powell made NSA. Obviously no need for deep vetting to negotiate on Chagos? gov.uk/government/new…

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't a certain Prime Minister have an absolute hissy fit about a previous Prime Minister who prorogued Parliament - allegedly to avoid scrutiny and having to answer questions at PMQs during a difficult period.... I vaguely remember that. Anyone?
