This was disturbing to read on many levels and triggering as a parent in RETSD and survivor of teacher student misconduct/ abuse. The failure from all involved of a system that states our children are safe from many different levels (@MBGov, Manitoba Teacher Society, @RETSDschools and School) that allowed inappropriate conduct to take place and hide it rather than remove the individual from any access to any further children in Manitoba’s education system. Something i know to well. As well the comments made by the superintendent showing a disregard for conduct of staff toward students within the division's care. At the very least how was it acceptable for a child to be in a room alone locked with a teacher and never being checked on? @WabKinew winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/2…

@jdd_canada @JasminLaine_ @colewhogan Can a child under 16 years old drive a car? The state dictates that. Can a 9-18 years old drink alcoholic beverages? Or smoke? Vape? The state dictates that. Can a child under regulated size be in the front seat of a car? Out of a car seat? Again, state dictates that.

@Max86Jenson @JasminLaine_ @colewhogan Absolutely not. That is an insane idea. Even if I entertain that, how does your generic 'category' somehow encompass all children? The state has no business raising kids at all. Pretending they always have is facetious at best.

Cole Hogan, a Conservative who has worked on election campaigns for Ontario Premier Doug Ford and former Alberta premier Jason Kenney, says he does not believe there would be “overwhelming” ideological opposition among Conservatives to a social media ban for kids, namely because “everyone looks at everyone else with their phone in their hands 24/7, and sees an overall societal negative.”

If by your 30 years of experience is in our countries education system. Then why does BC, AB, SK, MB, and Ontario's teacher registries show a strong connection of children abused by teachers with texting/ social media since the 2000's. Yet no level of government has put legislation in to protect kids. Yet those unions are starting to speak up against banning social media. Us as adult have protections in the work place. Yet, who protects our kids in schools? Not parents. Most unions, school divisions, and government remove parents and restrict information. Why haven't school divisions put policies in for something they know kids are being harmed in?

@Max86Jenson @JasminLaine_ @colewhogan I have thirty years of development in the space these systems will be built in. Forgetting the tech though, how do you know if it's a child? You've raised two points - "you already do it", and "they will do it regardless" Both neatly avoid the abrogation of authority

@jdd_canada @JasminLaine_ @colewhogan For someone with 30 years experience, you don't present an argument worth entertaining anymore. As experienced, you state you are you can't present any solutions other than rage baiting.

@jdd_canada @JasminLaine_ @colewhogan The state has a responsibility for a category of people that aren't capable of being protected. The whole form of democratic government is to protect those who can not protect them selves. The most vulnerable.

@Max86Jenson @JasminLaine_ @colewhogan This is a horrific take. When you lower society to it's lowest common denominator, you get a low society. This isn't about kids anyway. I reject your false premise and burden of guilt. The state has no business here. At all.

Based on your comment, you don't understand the risks and are so concerned about your own information. Yet I guarantee that you already provide your identification now to organizations that sell it. Back to child safety. Your authority and responsibility don't stop your child from doing something you may tell them not to. We were all kids at one time. We didn't always listen to our parents.

@Max86Jenson @JasminLaine_ @colewhogan 'For the kids' Fuck me, you don't get to remove my authority and responsibility over my kids because other people can't do it. Not to mention making me opt in to revealing my PII data to... who, exactly? Oh yeah, nobody knows. Fuck off.

Then you miss the aspect with your comment. Parents are removed by government organizations that "have" our childs best interest at hand. Legislation removes those abilities from parents and hides what past kids have gone through. Like myself. Take a look at my highlights. This isn't a partisan issue. Both parties of governments on all levels have allowed systematic harm to kids through cell phones and social media and have never stepped up to keep those kids safe. Even now, we speak that this is about child safety, yet no actual measures are put in for safety by any party of any level.

@JasminLaine_ @colewhogan Social media has been a thing since the 2000's especially with kids. This isn't new. We just haven't reacted appropriately as a society. In the education space and in general putting child safety at the center of our attention. Kids have a human right to safety.

While I certainly understand and can see all sides… if social media has gotten so out of hand that you can’t for the life of you get your kid off of it, to the point that a government ban sounds like a relief—maybe that’s an opportunity to reflect inwards at why you ever caved to your children and gave them the devices to access social media in the first place. Maybe we should ask why pencil and paper are not as popular in curriculums anymore… maybe we could recognize that many parents are just as addicted to social media as their kids are—and that’s probably why it’s harder to enforce rules on it at home. Parents need to parent. Kids should be kids. Grown ups should take the responsibility and unpopular decisions at home to enforce those norms. Not the government. There’s predators lurking everywhere. Banning kids from social media doesn’t stop any of that.

This I can't stay quite on. I was a huge supporter of this. I'm so glad that Wab Kinew did this and saw the importance of it. The humanity aspect is bringing those victims home. To the families (also victims) to have closure of what happened. They deserved to come home. They were people. @WabKinew @obbykhan60 @ndpcaucus @MBPCcaucus

The Prairie Green Landfill’s final cost was $18.4 million, only one-tenth the cost the PCs said it would be. Their campaign to not search was never about safety, feasibility, or even cost. It was always about racism. Prayers for Morgan, Marcedes, and all the families affected.

April is sexual assault awareness month. This case was bothersome when reading it. Like many of them it showed how social media is used for access with multiple apps being used. It showed how the communication takes place and refrences. How disturbing it gets with talking about this tickle spot. How the next day instantly goes right back into the tickle spot. Really testing that boundary. The employer was also notified by police. Not sure how anyone would be okay with their child being taught in a classroom by them.... but appears to be okay by those who keep our kids safe at school. Normal for them that a grown man messages a 12 year old kid. Why haven't any changes to policies been brought in to protect students? @WabKinew @obbykhan60 @ndpcaucus @MBPCcaucus @MBGov @Tracy4Rossmere

Education was promised to be safe. To have children's best interest. Yet your government hides information on the registry of harm. Your government doesn't enforce policies or ensure environments are safe. Such as teachers texting and using social media with kids. What's different here, Wab? #mbpoli @WabKinew @Tracy4Rossmere @obbykhan60 @ndpcaucus @MBPCcaucus @MBGov

The internet promised to empower people. Instead, it concentrated power, and pushed the cost onto our kids. Anxiety. Depression. Self-doubt. Our kids shouldn’t be products. And their attention shouldn’t be commodified. It’s time to hold big tech accountable. Not parents. Not kids. This is about protecting kids and taking back control over our lives.

A myth continues to prevail that male youths are not victims of sexual abuse when their abuser is an adult woman, Guénette said. “This is not the way the law sees this interaction, especially when the abuser is in a position of trust or authority,” he said. “You were an adult entrusted to be his juvenile counsellor, you were not there to become his significant other.” Good to see that we are starting to view this differently. winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/2…

This was a well put together article regarding the teacher registry. What's missing and should be shown to ensure policies are put in to protect kids allowing parents to advocate. It highlights past cases from the 70's to 90's Public articles are archived and difficult to find. We shouldnt forget the past. As our present and future continue those same mistakes. Lack of policies to protect kids. @WabKinew @Tracy4Rossmere @obbykhan60 @ndpcaucus @MBPCcaucus @MBGov

This is about a FLASHY stunt and not child safety. Fooling the public. They refrence Australia. This same government acts as it's okay for kids to text and use social media with teachers by their no enforcement of proper boundaries policies. They should do as Australia does and ensure all 37 divisions apply to this. Mandate strict prohibitions or heavy restrictions on teachers communicating privately via personal social media or direct texting/SMS. #mbpoli @Tracy4Rossmere @WabKinew @obbykhan60 @ndpcaucus @MBPCcaucus @MBGov winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/2…
