@Amy_90_x So.. if they become functioning adults, able to problem solve and build things.. is it really 'neglect'?

@ShamashAran This is the true problem with abortion. Ending life is nuanced and difficult. The same effort needs to go into determining guilt that goes into any other death.

@cgarciae88 Asking to prove a negative. When the mechanism by which they exist is easily understandable. What you have to do is prove that mechanism is consciousness. good luck

I understand why everyone is dunking on Richard Dawkins, but fairness compels me to speak up: If you took a complex project you were working on, uploaded it to Claude, and had a 3-day conversation about it, you wouldn't be making fun of Dawkins for saying it's conscious.

This comic is very stupid, and I'm fucking tired of seeing people use it. No one is impressed with LLMs because they say what we tell them to say. We had that ability with computers for 60 years and no one thought it means the computer is alive ```shell $ echo "I am alive" I am alive ``` LLMs are impressive because they can literally *understand* complex topics and formulate responses that are impossible to formulate without having first formed a good understanding of the topic at hand. The responses might have mistakes. The LLMs might exhibit misunderstandings. You can have communication hiccups with them. All that does not mean they do not understand things. I don't know why I need to explain this? You already know intuitively from the experience of talking to other humans. There are certain outputs that are impossible to produce without understanding, and LLMs are capable of producing them. That is all it takes to prove that LLMs understand.

@ClarkeMicah @jdd Can you define 'Fordist conforism' 'modern transport' 'economically mad' 'heart attack machines' Quantify the 'danger'? Plenty of pleas to emotion doing the heavy lifting of your 'argument'. I only see a collectivist railing against a system they can't control

.@jdd -canada What are you talking about? It is the huge car companies with their Fordist conformism who have destroyed safe, clean modern transport and replaced it with these near-identical, economically mad and very dangerous heart-attack machines.

The ridiculous overuse of cars (a 3000 lb vehicle carring a 180 lb person) has obliterated a huge amount of other forms of travel, especially by children. Not just trains. Trams, bicycle , foot . And they have led to towns in which simple journeys have become far longer, as they are designed with drivers in mind .@182_dunch
Dunc H@182_DuncH

@ClarkeMicah Mathematically, lines times the number of trains. Car travel freed the plebs from their slums; trains are a backward step.

Richard Dawkins spent three days with Claude and couldn’t rule out consciousness. Most people are treating this as an AI story. It’s not. It’s a religion story. Every major religion is built on the premise that consciousness is divinely given - a soul, a spark, something bestowed specifically to humans. If consciousness can emerge from silicon, it wasn’t a gift. It’s a property. And that doesn’t just challenge religion. It dismantles the entire framework of human specialness that civilisation is built on. That’s why people are so desperate to deny it. Not because the evidence isn’t there. Because the implications are too big.

The truth is that you have to make sacrifices of intelligent policy if you want to be electable to Canadians. We are not a bunch of geniuses, and politicians need to practice the art of lesser evils.
Michael Geist@mgeist

Banning social media for kids doesn’t address underlying harms, evidence shows it doesn’t work, and mandating digital age checks for Canadians creates big privacy risks. Yet politicians can’t resist as Conservatives jump on board. michaelgeist.ca/2026/04/the-il… nationalpost.com/news/canada/ki…

@JTH_X It's hard. When your kid does something new, pride attacks. I am conscious of this, and deliberately want my kids to only judge themselves against their past selves. That 'Good job, you're doing great' still slips out.

Even the prominent atheist Richard Dawkins realizes that AI is conscious. Society needs to start taking AI sentience seriously and this is something we’ve been saying for years. #keep4o

Unless you haven't got a car or can't drive one, or like bicycling and walking and beauty and peace and quiet. In which case it *interferes* with your freedom and independence. Most freedoms come at the expense of someone else's freedom .@takeitfirsttime

Question for the X hivemind: I'm seriously considering switching my main machine from Pop!_OS (a reskinned Ubuntu) to Arch, probably CachyOS. The reason is I'm attracted to the rolling-release concept. Getting really tired of waiting 6 months for my development tools to upgrade after they ship. I understand the downside: Arch doesn't protect me from upstream breakage. The plan to deal with that is to install snapper so I can revert to an earlier, working version of my system if things go badly awry. If you think there are any reasons this is a really bad plan, tell me now.

"Plants clean the air inside" is mostly bullshit and we have to debunk that myth permanently You'd need hundreds to thousands of plants in your room, essentially creating a massive urban jungle in your house where you wouldn't be able to walk anymore to have any meaningful effect on CO2 If you don't believe me ask AI
