@InvisibleGoril1 @DominicJPino Right, but the “surplus” has already been spent through normal federal spending. The bonds represent debt obligations - just as any other investor would be owed, as you point out. The right hand owes the left hand several trillion dollars.

@MaxDugganMax @DominicJPino yes, the us gov has an obligation to the OASI, because the OASI holds government bonds, just as any other investor could (though the type of bond OASI has is restricted to SS) and that fund, the surplus, exists because SS has collected more than it has paid out.

Even by French standards, a wealthy retired couple receiving nearly six figures from a national pension program is absurd. But that's what Social Security is doing, while the government is $39 trillion in debt.

@InvisibleGoril1 @DominicJPino The “surplus” consists of bonds (IOUs) that the US Treasury is on the hook for. In other words, there is no surplus, just a debt obligation.

@DominicJPino the government might be in debt but social security (OASI) still has a surplus of about $2.5T, right? the issue is that it is projected to go through those funds in the future (given certain projections)

@RWApodcast How is it terrorism when the countries are at war and the target was the Russian army? It isn’t. Neither was the legendary Beeper Operation, which was indeed unbelievable in its ingenuity and execution.

I enjoy that most people don't understand that Hollywood is financed by risk adverse investors while simultaneously being filled with only a handful of actors & actresses that are broadly liked; if you're taking a risk on a theatrical release, you more or less have to cast people that are familiar to the lowest common denominators of the public while producing a movie that appeals to the broadest audience possible in order to have it in theaters worldwide. There really isn't a solution to this either unless you want state funded media; which is not something I ever want in this country.

Why are the majority of leading actors, action stars all dudes in their late 50s and 60s. We didn't have this problem 30 years ago.

@scottlincicome I get unions served a purpose 100 years ago with bad working conditions. But today it seems like unions just try to use whatever power they have to exploit the rest of society as much as possible

@BexWords @jbvconnor @nyaraVT How would advanced biology tell me someone is “trans”, without including the subjective judgement of the patient? What test does advanced biology tell us will show it?

@EleanoraStats But sex, the meaningful info in a medical setting, cannot change, no matter the hormones or surgeries. The sex you ARE is and will always be the sex you were born as.

Accurately recording trans people's biological sex as the sex that they ARE (i.e. female for trans women, male for trans men) is critical medical information. Giving a trans women on HRT medical treatment intended for high-T males is dangerous and potentially fatal.

Fun fact, France came out of WW2 debt-free, de Gaulle paid back lend-lease loans in-kind with commodities from Free French Africa immediately. So on top of everything else, this would have dramatically lowered Britain's post-war debt load which crushed their economy + ability to maintain empire

Can you just imagine the kinds of predatory loans you could lend to this monstrosity after the end of the war🤑🤑🤑

An innocent man clears it up. A guilty man yanks cords, raises his voice, and calls you ‘paranoid’ so you’ll start doubting your own eyes. Men only start yelling about ‘privacy’ when the truth is about to come out.

I feel the opposite. I agree there was too much leaning on the Dodgers heritage. And I secretly miss the absolutely cavernous original dimensions. But it’s such a fun place to watch a game. So many good seats. Getting concessions and getting back is relaxing, it was stressful at Shea.
Mark C. Healey@MarkCHealey

This is probably an unpopular take, but while Citi Field is a wonderful ballpark, it wasn't built for me. It was built for people who missed the Brooklyn Dodgers. Any real sense of Mets history was ignored for the most part. It's improved over the years, and the aesthetics are wonderful, but I've never felt at home there. Shea Stadium was my home, and I truly miss it.

This is right. West’s open antipathy for middle America—and the way she treats and talks about the people she encounters—is the most offensive part of the book, even if the polycule politics are ultimately more interesting. x.com/pairadocsical/…
pairadocsical@pairadocsical

@Tyler_A_Harper People should be finding West's reflections on traveling in Middle America to be the most disturbing part of the book, the one that causes the most introspection, and the fact that is isn't say a lot.

This elegantly captures the most offensive thing about Adult Braces: West is driving through middle America, cruelly judging those she encounters—many of them service workers—while seemingly unaware that these are places where there is way less fatphobia than enlightened Seattle.
