I am a Democrat. I served in the Clinton administration. I did not vote for Donald Trump and am highly unlikely to support him or his acolytes in the future. I also have serious disagreements with many of the Trump administration’s domestic and foreign policies. But it is profoundly disturbing that a growing segment of the far left appears to be almost rooting for Hamas, Hezbollah, the Iranian regime, and other forces fundamentally opposed to the United States and our allies. This seems to reflects a corrosive strain of anti-Americanism, dressed up in postcolonial theory, that risks blinding us to the moral realities of our world and the nature of our adversaries.

Following is the full Netanyahu quote. People have to try pretty hard to be offended by this, especially because he’s coming to the same conclusion that led to the development of Christian Just War Theory, namely that in a “fallen” world the good must sometimes fight to defend themselves - “In this world, it’s not enough to be moral. It’s not enough to be just. It’s not enough to be right. You know, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century—someone that I admire a lot—was the historian Will Durant. Now, he wrote many volumes. I read most of them. He also wrote The Lessons of History, a very brief, 100-page book, in which he said, well, history proves that, unfortunately and unhappily, Jesus Christ has no advantage over Genghis Khan. Because if you are strong enough, ruthless enough, powerful enough—evil will overcome good. Aggression will overcome moderation. So you have no choice, if you look at the world as it is today—you have to be blind not to see—that the democracies, led by the United States, have to reassert their will to defend themselves and to oppose their enemies in time, while there’s still time, before the jarring gong of danger wakes them up—and wakes them up too late. This is where we are now. The fact that people don’t see that—the fact that a lot of the news media are hawking a lot of fake news, but also a lot of short-sightedness, and do not see the historic period and the historic struggle that we are engaged in now—doesn’t obviate these truths. We have to be strong. We have to be armed. We have to be more powerful than the barbarians—or they will not be merely at the gate; they’ll crash our gates and destroy our societies.”

This quote is from the American historian Will Durant. Fun fact (as shown in my upcoming book): Netanyahu and Khamenei both grew up reading Will Durant (who was and is widely popular in Iran, his STORY OF CIVILIZATION treated as a must-read classic in Persian translation)

So why did the Church develop Just War Theory? The Church developed Just War Theory because until the messiah comes (or, from your perspective, comes back) peace on earth under the kingship of God has not yet been realized. So we are living in pre-messianic reality, and in our current reality the good must sometimes defend themselves. Again, you have to try pretty hard to be offended by this. This is the full Netanyahu quote: “In this world, it’s not enough to be moral. It’s not enough to be just. It’s not enough to be right. It’s amazing how things sound when you clip them out of context. The full quote is actually very clear. He explicitly quotes American historian William Durant, who wrote in one of his books that in a world with evil it isn’t enough to just be good. You need to be both good and strong. Otherwise the Ghengis Khan’s of the world will just kill the Jesus’s of the world if they can’t defend themselves. That’s pretty much exactly what the Church came to understand when the Church developed Just War Theory…

Whenever the Israel Derangement crowd quotes current or past Israeli leaders saying something that sounds bad, it’s almost always a good bet that they lifted a clip out of context or cut off the quote in a dishonest way to misrepresent what is actually being said. This is a great example. In the full quote Netanyahu is quoting American historian William Durant saying that it isn’t enough to just be good in a world full of evil, but you need to be both good and also strong. Otherwise the Genghis Khans of the world will just kill the good. But Hassan is using a misleading clip from the fuller remark to stir up division between Jews and their Christian brothers and sisters, pretending that Netanyahu was insulting Christianity. Dishonest and transparent.

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud slams Iran: I do not understand how they claim to defend Islamic causes while attacking Islamic countries. They are not attacking just one nation—Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, Oman, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Türkiye—all are Islamic countries, and all have been targeted. Even before this war, what was Iran’s contribution to the Islamic world? They supported the Houthi militia in Yemen. They supported militias in Iraq—and now they are attacking Iraqi territory. They have interfered in Lebanon through Hezbollah, not only hijacking political decision-making but also carrying out destabilizing actions across the region, including in Saudi Arabia. One of the clearest examples is Iran and Hezbollah’s role in Syria. So where is this so-called support for the Muslim world when such actions are taking place? How can they claim to support Islamic causes while backing regimes that oppress their own people, assassinating political figures in Lebanon, and empowering militias that hinder development in Iraq? I do not see any real support for Islamic causes. These are merely slogans used as cover. In reality, these tools are used to serve Iranian interests—not the principles they claim to defend.

My mom just called me from Iran through her landline. I haven’t spoken to her since February. She said that Israel and the US are bombing the regime nonstop. They taped all the windows because the building shakes constantly. I asked if any civilians are getting hurt, and she replied “No, No, No. No normal civilians are getting hurt” Everyone is hanging in there and counting the days for this regime to end and for the return of the Shah. 🇮🇷

So yes, recycling old tropes about Jewish power and neo-Nazi “Zionist Occupied Government” garbage is antisemitic. It is not “just criticism of Israel.” This isn’t hard.

The letter Bernie Sanders is promoting recycles false allegations blaming Israel for “manufacturing” the Syrian Civil War & dragging America to war with Iraq. Israel had nothing to do with Syria, and Israeli officials warned and cautioned America against invading Iraq.

The tired attempt to pretend away antisemitism by ignoring it & pretending it was “only criticism of Israel.” Point A: “Israel secretly controls the American gov’t. Everything bad is b/c Israel and the Jooos.” Point B: “HEY, ITS NOT ANTISEMITIC TO CRITICIZE ISRAEL!”
Jon Favreau@jonfavs

The tired, relentless attempt to equate opposition to the Israeli government with antisemitism isn't just wrong and offensive, it's a badly failing political strategy that has hurt the fight against a very real threat to Jewish people. No one buys this shit beyond the most hardcore supporters of the Israeli government.
