One of the (many) significant air crashes of this date... May 25 2002: China Airlines Flight 611, a B-747, disintegrates in mid-air off Penghu Islands (Taiwan Strait). All 225 aboard die: deadliest crash in Taiwanese history. Investigation determined that the in-flight breakup was caused by metal fatigue cracks that originated from a tail strike at Kai Tak Airport on February 7, 1980. The aircraft was not repaired in accordance with Boeing policies and maintenance manuals. Over its 22-year service life, repeated pressurization cycles allowed these tiny cracks to propagate, resulting in the structural failure.
