My tribute to my dad, who passed away last month in the UK. He was a proud Indian immigrant *and* a proud British citizen. His life story is one long rebuttal to the nativists, bigots and xenophobes.

Mosab Abu Toha@MosabAbuToha

My wife and I just spoke with our families in Gaza. Most of them told us they’ll be sleeping tonight on mattresses and blankets completely soaked with rainwater. More than half of our relatives are children, some under the age of five. And yes, tonight they will sleep on wet mattresses and blankets, in a tent on the street. I know that sharing this won’t change anything for them, not tonight, and not even next year. How do I know? Because babies have burned in tents, been beheaded, and been buried beneath the rubble, and not a single person stepped in to save their lives. So how am I supposed to expect that anyone will save the life of a child who may die from the cold? Can a camera capture the cold the way it captures flames? Anyway, the only reason I’m writing this is because they told me these things, and I feel it is my duty to share them with you. It is a responsibility. A responsibility for them to speak as they suffer, a responsibility for me to carry their story, and a responsibility, ah, what a responsibility, for you to take action. Yes, it is your money that is killing us and funding our murderers and oppressors. It is your governments that are protecting our slaughterers.

Since the ceasefire agreement took effect on 10 October 2025, Israel has killed at least 241 Palestinians in Gaza, 117 of them children. More than 600 people have been injured. Israel continues to hamper the entry of humanitarian aid and starve the population, denying about 75% of aid entry requests. It committed in the agreement to allow 600 aid trucks in a day, yet only 145 trucks on average have been allowed in. The agreement did not establish an international mechanism to ensure Israel upholds its obligations under international law. Israel continues to bomb, starve and destroy Gaza unrestrained. Most people in Gaza are homeless, hungry and lacking access to basic services, yet world leaders are standing by, issuing empty statements and enabling the normalization of this unbearable reality. The international community must act now to ensure protection for Palestinians, the immediate entry of humanitarian aid, and accountability for those responsible for the genocide.

Exactly two years ago, the University of Ottawa suspended me from my medical residency training in public health because of social media posts in support of Palestinian human rights. They framed my social media posts as “unprofessional”. The irony being that I studied the impacts of settler colonialism on health in Palestine during my public health training. They messed with the wrong person. They later reinstated me, without any apology, so I left their racist institution to put my time and energy to places and people who actually deserve it. It’s been a year since I filed a human rights complaint against the university, and they continue to try to dismiss the case with frivolous motions with factual inaccuracies, but the court seems to acknowledge the value in hearing the case. It is blatant discrimination on basis of anti-Palestinian racism. I’m taking them (and the faculty member who doxxed me) to a provincial human rights tribunal to seek accountability and justice. To anyone else who is facing similar forms of repression for solidarity with Palestine - remember you are on the right side of history. To stand against genocide is the most decent and moral position to take. To oppose genocide as a healthcare worker is the most professional position to take. Keep your head held high. The institutions will come around when there is no political or economic cost to oppose genocide. Until then, we will keep persisting and pushing back against bullies and racist institutions. Free Palestine, from the river to the sea.
