多元文化主义（Multiculturalism）虽然这一政策自1971年确立以来被视为加拿大的立国之本，但是我认为文化认同的基石是先融入再保留！ 当外来文化进入加拿大时，应当首先确立对本土核心价值的尊重与认同，这包括对法治、性别平等、个人自由以及语言的接纳。如果缺乏这种前提，而是一味强调自身文化的特殊性，甚至试图让原籍国的文化规范与本土文化完全“平起平坐”，这是非常错误的！ 当前的多元文化实践有时陷入了过度强调差异的误区。如果新移民在未充分理解并尊重加拿大本土文化底蕴的情况下，就急于要求文化特权，这是我完全不认同的。 真正的文化多样性，应当是在承认并遵循加拿大社会大框架下的“点缀”，而非对主体文化的消解。 提倡多元文化不应等同于文化相对主义。外来文化应当在尊重并学习加拿大本土文化、履行公民义务的基础之上，再适度保留和展示其独特性。 只有当所有族群都将“加拿大人”这一身份置于其族裔文化之上时，加拿大才会越来越好！
